There is no way this is the approved manual. Perhaps a first run or someone horribly plagiarized the book. Glaring issues are throughout. This section starts with a lower case and it is not a complete sentence. There are level 2 headings not bolded when most are. I could go on. Be cautious when purchasing.I was required to purchase this manual for one of my intro classes and needed to cite it for assignments, otherwise I think I could have probably done without it. The reason is that there are many free online sources for APA style guidelines, my favorite being the Purdue OWL website. While this book is well formatted and clearly written, it is simply much easier and faster to search a website for answers to most formatting questions. The main benefit I see for owning this book is that it offers many excerpts of sample papers and reference pages. Many APA formatting samples are available online, but having this book to refer to takes away any doubt about the correct formatting. Other than that I don't see a lot of benefits to owning this book, other than that it goes into more detail about style rules than online sources. My biggest wish has been that the APA would publish a searchable version of their guide online; I would happily pay good money for the convenience!Although it was new and packaged, as soon as I pulled off the wrapping I noticed it had a horrid smell. I've never smelled anything like it, so it's hard to describe. But it's terrible! Then I began reading it.

The pages were faded in some spots, and there are very bad spelling errors throughout what I have read so far. I had to go to my college bookstore and buy a copy from them, and I compared the real one with whatever the heck was sent to me. I am attaching pics to show how bad it is. There are a lot more errors, I am just posting a couple. I am returning it immediately. It sounds like most people are getting the real deal, but do be aware that there are bad copies going around as well. This was a book that had clearly been badly re-typed by someone, as can be seen in the pics I included. If you're looking for a quick reference.I recommend APA: The Easy Way by Houghton and Houghton. I have grown to appreciate it's simplistic approach to the APA basics. Hope this helped.The spiral bound version is handy to use. I got the spiral version, which I strongly recommend, because it will lie flat while you search for the guidelines you need. My reason for rating it four stars rather than five is due to the way the APA organizes the guide, not due to the print or binding quality of the actual manual. I've used MLA as well as APA, and I find the index listings of the APA needlessly difficult and intuitively lacking. While it's true there are things we didn't need a few years ago (the various only citation guides, etc.) there's no real reason for the manual to be organized so you have to search for several terms before you find the right one (and sometimes you still don't find it). The earliest printing of this edition had errors in it (go figure!).

As a university instructor, I think the manual could benefit from additional paragraph-length examples so students can see how a full paragraph would look with the various iterations of author and page citation criteria. In case anyone needs to know this - you can also find most (or all) of the manual on the APA website. Purdue OWL is, of course, a go-to site where we refer students, but I've learned it may not be as updated as we need. Have a strong pot of coffee or a glass of wine handy if you're using this style for the first time. It is what it is, and we have to live with it.Highly recommended for college students. Everything that you could ever need to know is covered in this manual which is written and published by the American Psychological Association, which is the association who sets out the guidelines for writing APA style papers. Owning this book will ensure that you do not have questions on paper set up, paper critique, and the all-important resources layout. So, if you are like me and you are one of the people that want to make sure that every APA paper that you write is 100 correct then you need to own this book and use it to its fullest. You will not be let down by any means.I bought this manual to help me with my citations and references for my dissertation. The APA referencing system is something that I have always struggled with. I have previously found that many of the online information on APA referencing is unclear and that websites contradict each other (this is probably due to the many different editions and revisions). So despite having used this referencing system throughout my time at University, I was still not 100 certain on the rules. I also thought that the price for this book was really good. In the past I have purchased core textbooks for my course which have been ?80. So I thought that ?20 for a new book was great. I really should have purchased this book when I started my degree.

I didn’t think that I would need one at the time, but I would definitely advise anyone who is starting a degree, in which they will be required to use the APA referencing system, to buy this book. I was also great that I could use my Amazon Prime to purchase this book as I ordered it quite late, it came the next day. Overall, I think this book is going to be really useful.The book itself is very handy, but the Kindle version is clunky and unmanageable. There is no within-chapter navigation so you have to scroll up and down (and not very smoothly at that) to go between pages and sections. When trying to format a document with tables, for example, you may need to refer to content on a dozen different pages but have no way of finding it other than to go backwards and forwards over and over. Do yourself a favour and get a hard copy format.Claims psychology is a science when it more of social art. It comes off as a benign manual, but what it's really designed to do is ensure that what is written between the lines of the text gets implemented in the field of study. This book is a political manifesto of the worst kind. I find it utterly shocking that modern psychologists don't stop to consider the merits of their own manual, a free mind cannot delve into the depths of human thought with such diabolical, narcissistic, and petty rules being applied constantly. One copy of this should be preserved, the rest burned.It is relatively easy to navigate and it contains useful sample 'Cover Letter' which is sent along the manuscript journal article. It can be a bit overwhelming though trying to follow all guidelines, so it is recommended that you refer to it frequently as you write your article.I'm not sure whether it's because they were published a while ago so the glue has dried but many pages have fallen out which makes it difficult to handle the book. I rearely refer to it so it's not that much of an issue but I still wouldn't recommend buying it.

Without a coherent argument for such a system, practitioners may view writing in APA style as a burdenso me hurdle to navigate instead of as a means to efficien tly and clearly co mmunicate within a discipline. There are at least two plausible reasons why a universal form at is helpful. First, papers organized and executed in a common manner allow th e reader to focus his or her time and effort on understanding and reacting to the content of th e writing, not the format. This helps the readers of your work efficiently consume the written material by being able to anticipate the information being presented next. For exam ple, if one wanted to know the operational definitions of the variables m entioned in the abstract or intro duction, then one would only need to turn to the procedure section of the article. By learning the setup and organization of the style, one will understand the framework and blueprint that othe r researchers are using. This knowledge should enable one to more quickly determine the research m ost relevant to a particular situation. When systematically written, other researchers are able to properly replicate an d, if appropriate, meta- analyze previous work by knowing which specifi c sections contain the relevant information. While we see these two reasons as impor tant, we recognize that students are often overwhelmed by the APA manual, and learning AP A style for the firs t time seems like a very daunting task. By summarizing the key aspects of the manual, the learning process for beginners is simplified by f ocusing their attention to most relevant aspects of the manual. The purpose of this paper is to help readers us e the newest version of the manual, the sixth edition, in their own research and writing. We believe this paper will help both writers and readers of research in education and the social sciences. This article provides an overview to the latest edition of the P ublication Manual.

The fundamental requirements or guide lines are covered to provide a synopsis of APA style. W e extracted what we believe are the fundamental requirem ents for those required to use this editorial style of report writing. The information provided in this article reinforces, rather than replaces, the Publication Manual. Paper Organization APA style refers to editorial sty le rather th an how one expresses an idea. Editorial s tyle involves how manuscripts or papers are formatte d; it allows f or consistency in presentation across authors. As such, format of an APA st yle paper provides rules or guidelines for how The standards set forth in the Publication Manual are widely used in other disciplines. An APA style manuscript is organized into four main sections (i.e., introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion ). Each of the m ain sections is typed on continuous pages with subsections specified in the Method section, which will be described later. The Publication Manual recommends that one’s writing reflect an economy of expres sion and the consistent use of verb tense. These two overall recommendations keep the reader focuse d and help facilitate the flow of thought. Past and pres ent perfect tense (e.g., participants had completed ) are suggested for the introduction and Procedure sections when discussing prior events. Past tense alone and present tense, respectively, are recommended for the Results and Discussion sections. Although not directly mentioned, the Participants, Apparatus, and Materials sections are presented in past tense, active voice. There are exceptions to the use of pa st tense in these, and other, sections in the Publication Manual. For example, when describing a published instrument in the materials section, the use of the present tense is appropriate. The Abstract is written using the same verb tense from the section (s) where the content is obtained.

The use of first person pronouns ( I and we ) is preferred over more ambiguous third person pronouns (e.g., the researchers) when refere ncing the author(s) of the study. The use of the second person ( you ) is not explicitly mentioned in the manual, though one should use good judgment when deciding whether to use it. Th e manual is explicit in its recomm endations to avoid the use of colloquial expressions, jargon, and ambiguous pronouns. It also makes specific recommendations on the use of comparisons and attributions (i.e., third person, anthropomorphism, and the editorial we ). For example, the current Publication Manual encourages authors to ba lance the rules with their own judgment. However, there are numerous formatting rules that must be used. All manuscripts use a running head, 1 inch marg ins, left-justificati on, double-spacing throughout, and two spaces after end punctuation in the body of the manuscript. We created a downloadable set of instructions for formatting an APA styl e paper in Microsoft Word 2007. This m ay be downloaded from the following URL: at2007.pdf The first page of an APA style paper is th e title page. All APA style papers have a running head, which consists of a br ief title that serves as an arti cle identifier for readers, and pagination. The running head is located.5 inch down from the top of the page above the 1 inch margin and is left-justified. The page number s are typed flush with the right m argin. The remaining parts of the title page are center justifie d in the upper half of the page, and include the title, author(s), and affiliation of each of the author(s). In the title, wording such as investigation of... or study of... is avoided because such wording unnecessarily increases the length of the title and can pose problems for indexers. The nam e(s) of the author(s) is presented below the title followed by each au thor’s institutional af filiation(s) underneath.

The format of the author note is to type the words Author Note and center them on the page. Although no speci fic rules exist for how far down from the institutional affiliation the author note should beg in, we suggest spacing down twice. The author note consists of up to four paragraphs of inform ation, but we suggest that departm ent affiliation and contact information, at a minimum, be provide d. Each paragraph begins with a.5 inch tab indent. The first paragraph provides inform ation on the department affiliation of each author. The second paragraph provides information on any ch anges in the affiliation of an author. The last paragraph provides contact information of the author who shoul d be contacted for additional information. The Abstract begins on the second page. It is typically a 150-250 word summary of the manuscript providing an overview of the content. In essence, the abstract is a blocked, single paragraph representing each of the four main s ections of an APA style paper. Because the abstract contains the first words the reader encoun ters, the author should ta ke great care to write in a clear and concise manner because not doing so could result in the reader choosing to avoid the article altogethe r. The Publication Manual provides very detailed inform ation on writing the abstract in section 2.04 (pp. 25-27). The introduction begins on the third page a nd is headed by the ti tle of the manuscript exactly as it appears on the title page (centere d using upper and lower case letters). The heading Introduction is never used. The purpose of the introduc tion is to provide the rationale for why the study is being conducted and to address the particular theory or theories being used as a basis for the study.

A well-written in troduction can be developed al ong any number of guidelines or For example, it m ay present relevant id eas from the general to the specif ic in a logical progression or by reviewing increas ingly relevant studies as the problem under investigation is examined. The Publication Manual provides a set of general guidelines to consider when composing the introduction in section 2.05 (pp. 27- 28). Method The next portion of the report is designated by the Level 1 heading Method as illustrated above. The method section is comprised, m inimally, of two subsections: Participants and Procedure but may have additional s ubsections as warranted (e.g., Research Design, Apparatus, Materials ). They are designated as Level 2 headings that use upper and lower case bolded letters, and begin flush w ith the left margin. If the design, complexity, num ber, or sequence of conditions is complicated a Research Design or Summary of Design section may be used. The Publication Manual provides a set of general gu idelines to consider when composing the method in section 2.06 (pp. 29-32). The Participants section details the characteristics of the sample, how it was selected, and the determination of sample size (i.e., power analysis). A uthors should use participants when referring to humans and subjects for animals. One should include the num ber of male and female participants, the type of sam ple (i.e., haphazard, convenience, random, etc.), ag e range including descriptive sta tistics, and the diversity of the sample (i.e., American Indians, Asians, etc.). If applicable, the method used to assign particip ants to conditions and num ber of participants in each condition can be presented in this section or in th e results section dependent upon author preference. Some authors also include a statem ent indicating compliance with The Ethical Considerations section of this m anuscript provides additional inform ation about this topic.

For apparatus, the description should identify model number(s) and supplier info rmation. In the case of complex or custom - made equipment, a drawing or illustration of such equipm ent can be included in a figure or appendix. Typical laboratory equipment can be mentioned without going into a detailed description. For materials, the description s hould include the trait( s) the instrument was designed to measure, sample items, response opti ons, item s that are reve rse scored, the meaning of a lower or higher score, sp ecial instructions, and psychom etric information (i.e., past reliability and validity, if available, a nd the reliability of the m easure in the present sample). The Procedure section is perhaps the most straightfo rward part of an APA style paper. In this section, an exact descri ption detailing how the experiment was conducted is provided. The inform ation contained within the procedure section should provide enough detail so that the procedures could be re plicated by the reader. Results After the Method section, the Results section begins with a le vel 1 heading. In this section, one reports the finding(s) in an unbiased manner. All findings are explicitly stated without interpretation; as Officer Joe Friday stated in multiple episodes of Dragnet, “All we If an author prefers to do so, then we recommend including such information in the first paragraph of this section. We also recommend specifying which e ffect size will be reported. The results are organized with level 2 h eadings to help the reader navigate the information provided. When reporting each set of findings, present the analysis cond ucted, the measure or dependent variable used, and whet her the finding was significant supported by an appropriate statement (e.g., F -statement). When the resu lts are significant, describe those results using group means and standard deviations when appropriate.

The findings are often presented in order from most im portant or re levant to those that are of lesser importance. If a manipulation check was conduc ted, as is the case in m any experimental studies, then the re sults of that analysis should co me first as such information assists in establishing internal v alidity. When writing the results section, one should assum e the reader has a working knowledge of statistics.When reporting a value that can exceed 1.0 (e.g., F value) but the value is less than 1.0, one places a zero before the decim al point (e.g., 0.54). When the probability value is.000 or less, one uses “ p listing smaller values. There is a delicate balance that drives the decision to present info rm ation graphically, as well as how many graphics to include. Too many graphics, at the expense of sparse text, a nd the reader may be unable to maintain and comprehend the overall point(s). A basic guideline is to include graphics when doing so aids the presentation and unders tanding of the results section. The Publication Manual presents almost 40 pages of information and detail s concerning the creation of tables and figures in an electronic format. As such, addressing th e various nuances is be yond the scope of this paper. However, representing graphical informati on in the form of tables and figures is a skill that must be developed to convey data succinctly. While tables a nd figures are referenced in the results section, they are presented on separa te pages after the refe rences, respectively. Tables. Tables are used primarily to report quantitative data. The table number, using an Arabic numeral, appears at the top of the page and is left justified, as is th e italicized caption or title of the table that appears below it. It is explicitly labeled so th at the table is easily interpreted without needing to refer to the te xt in the results section.

With in the text, the table must be referenced, for example “The m eans and standard deviations are presente d in Table 1.” Below T a ble 1 contains a hypothetical sample layout of a table. As seen in Table 1, the exact probabilit ies f or multiple com parisons are not listed. In cases where reporting exact probabilities might lead to an unmanageable graphic, return to using the “ p rd in the fifth edition of the Publication Manual. Also, note that only the first letter of the first word of a label is capitalized. Figures. Figures are most often used to illustrate a general pattern of results minus the quantitative elements found in a table. However, any graphic that is not a table is considered a figure. Because of the advances in technology, researchers have many options regarding figure creation. The approach selected to create a fi gure varies dependent upon the content of the graphic. Line and bar graphs, though, are more frequently used than others. W hen creating a line graph, the independent variable is always plotted on the horizontal axis ( x ) and the dependent variable on the vertical axis ( y ). The measurem ent scale of the dependent variable is presented in equal intervals along the y axis as well. To avoid di storting the findings pictorially, a general guideline is to make the y axis two-thirds the length of the x axis. A notable exception is a 2 x 2 comparison where displayed results ar e not distorted by a symmetrical presentation. For example, Figure 1 illustrates an interaction from a hypothetical 2 x 2 analysis of variance. The caption is presented below the figure and in the same font as the figure labels (i.e., Arial, Futura, Helvetica, or other sans-serif font). The label of th e independent variable along the horizontal axis is presented in bo ldface type using upper and lower cas e letters as is the dependent variable label along the vertical axis.
