Just be sure the smaller size is okay with you.Using the guide I was able to locate nearly every bird I saw, approx 20 birds total. The photos are very clear and the information helpful and lively. But Stan does mention songs and calls in many of his blurbs. It's also strange to have the birds arranged by color rather than species groups. But the guide is aimed at amateurs. The writing is lively and not overly scientific. It's refreshing to read the genial prose and the occasional touch of humor. Many popular guides (Sibley, Audubon) are too dry and clinical. Overall: very good book, and recommended for amateur to intermediate level bird fanciers. I checked out 3 different Alaska bird guides (I believe only 3 exist), and Stan Tekiela's is the best.Birds are arranged by predominant color, smallest to largest.It is very informative and has beautiful pictures and is just all around a great book.Even my 4 year old grand daughter can use it. I am hoping to develop this interest more and more. I think that many others that are new to birding feel that way as well, hence the popularity of Stoke's, National Geographic, etc. Now that I am well into my 2nd decade of birding I have found that field guides with drawings of the birds (like Peterson's and Sibley's) are much more reliable and dependable. They are usually much more scientific and can show you field marks that are not easily seen in even the best of photographs. That being said, when I planned a birding trip to Alaska I decided on the Guide to the Birds of Alaska for several reasons. First, Sibley's Field Guide to Birds of Western North America contains birds that I have no chance on seeing on my trip, making it a little harder to use (no Roadrunners in Alaska). Second, since I have never birded Alaska I wanted a book focused on that state only so that I could study it before the trip. Lastly, I like looking at the photos. The quality of the photography is very, very good for a field guide. A few of them (the Black Oystercatcher on a nest with a snowcapped mountain behind it and the shot of a Cassin's Auklet skimming across the water) are beautiful photos in their own right. One thing that it took me a little time to get used to was the Distribution Chart. Most field guides have small maps on each page and are color coded for where and when a bird might be found. This guide uses a chart and codes instead.

However, once I got used to it I actually liked this feature. Another thing; the order of the families seemed unusual and does not follow the established ornithological precedent of listing the oldest species first, then graduating to more recently evolved birds. Still, it was close enough that it didn't throw me off too badly. All it all I would recommend this guide to anyone heading to Alaska and is interested in wild birds. However, I have to confess that I also brought my Sibley's (just as a back up!). It lists most all of the birds that live and migrate to the great state. It lists both birds that live on the land and also those that live near the sea or ocean. It also lists accidental birds to the state. I've used this book to identify most every bird I've seen in Alaska. Compared to the older version, this one is more colorful. I encourage bird enthusiasts to purchase this book to easily identify the birds in Alaska.I bought it for a trip I haven't taken yet, but I think it will work. I used guides with a similar format in Hawaii and Europe, and they both helped me identify most of the birds I saw.It was very very helpful as a quick reference, and has. Birding list in front. It reminded me of a book onHawaiian birds by Jim Denny. Forewarned is forearmed.I used it in Alaska for two weeks while on vacation and it was invaluable as many of the birds were new. What I especially liked was the how the book broke the state into sections then listed the species as common, uncommon, or rare for each season of the year in each section of the state. This quickly narrowed the possible choices. There is also at least two pictures of each bird. FYI Alaska is three times the land mass of Texas, and much of it is remote where many types of birds abound; rarely seen by humans.
