TinkerTyler 1.0 out of 5 stars There is not a single picture in the book, creating large walls of text, and I've failed to find any sort of spacing or page formatting. Bought this for my mother and couldn't even give it to her for Christmas it was so bad.Many beginner books assume too much knowledge on your part.I recommend this.But, I am a visual learner and there were no pictures. I did like the chart of this hook size comparison and explanation. There was good info on types of yarn etc.I don't know how you can write a how-to book and not include any diagrams or photos, and only one pattern (for a granny square). If you are just learning to crochet then trust me, this is NOT the book for you. Additionally, the majority of the information found in this book is available in most pattern books and beginner books and those books actually contain patterns for more than just a granny square.

All in all I would not recommend this book to anyone. Updates say that this book now has illustrations of the stitches, other reviewers say it's only of the single crochet stitch. Even if it does have illustrations of stitches calling it the ULTIMATE crochet book is laughable. I stand by my original review. The newbies who gave this good reviews are beginners who don't know that you can get fantastic beginner books that have clear, concise directions with illustrations and several patterns for the same price.I recommend it!And what there is seems to over-labour the point. A very short book, no pictures which are VITAL for beginners. I wouldn't bother.I believe these are necessary for beginners. I returned it immediately.It needs more pictures for the beginners. There’s nothing wrong with this method, but when it comes to crochet for beginners we’d generally advise to try and stick to the two main methods. First you’re going to make what we call chain stitches. Although it’s not technically a stitch in the traditional sense of the word, it is perhaps one of the most important steps for making a piece of crochet. It’s a very short, dense and solid stitch, great for things like soft toys and the perfect stitch to crochet for beginners. By doing this your hook is already at the correct height for your row of stitches, as you hook always starts and finishes as what will be the top of your next stitch (if you don’t do a turning chain your stitches will end up on a slant). To make your first double crochet stitch, skip the first chain that is closest to your hook (this will act as your turning chain), just place your hook through a V, so that you have two loops on the top of your hook and one on the bottom, then complete the stitch as instructed. Then make your double crochet stitch into the next chain along. The amount of turning chains you need for different stitches varies, but you will always be told how many chains to make in a crochet pattern. Simply remove your hook from the work, and slowly pull the yarn to undo your stitches. Then once you’ve got past the bit where you made your mistake, you can just put your hook back into the loop and start again. Basically, at the end of a row cut the yarn leaving approx. 15cm, and then with your hook (or you can just loosen your loop and use your hands) pull this through the remaining loop on your hook. For example, with a puff stitch it’s essentially 3 or 4 treble stitches, but when doing each of the treble stitches you miss off the final pulling through two loops, then once you’ve done all the stitches you pull through all of the remaining loops which joins all of the trebles together into one stitch. Many words are just shortened versions, for example, previous is prev, beginning is beg. But other abbreviations are more specific, for example, BPhtr means a Back Post half treble crochet stitch. This simple bow pattern again uses only very simple stitches, but requires a little bit of assembly to come together. Yarn over so the working yarn comes behind the hook and then over it, to the left of the slip knot. Bring the working yarn underneath your hook. This common crochet term (abbreviated yo) means you bring the working yarn over the hook. Move your hook to the right, pulling the yarn over all the way through the slip knot. There will still be a loop on your hook, plus one loop beneath it. These loops are called chains, and you’ve just crocheted your first one! Each yarn over creates one chain, so if the instructions say “chain 20” then you will repeat these steps 20 times.

But it can get cumbersome the longer the chain, so counting as you go is a good habit to get into. Many crochet stitches begin the same way as the single crochet, so once you learn this stitch you’ll have the foundation to pick up more complex crochet stitches. Each chain looks a little bit like a V, with the mouth of the V open toward the right. Insert your hook into the second V from front to back through the V. Look carefully: When you insert the hook, there should be two loops of yarn above the hook and one strand of yarn below the hook. When you finish, there will be two loops on your crochet hook. Now you should have one loop on the hook. You have completed your first single crochet stitch! Each time, insert your hook into the very next chain. There’s just one more thing to learn for crocheting additional rows — the turning chain. To make another row, you need to turn your work so you can continue to crochet right to left. It gives your row a little height, so when you start working your stitches they can stand tall. Turning chains sometimes replace your first stitch, and can be worked in addition to your first stitch. (Your pattern will say what to do.) In this demo, we’ll show you the step-by-step for when the turning chain takes the place of the first stitch. Since your turning chain is standing in for your first stitch, jump ahead to the second stitch in your row. (In the photo above, the finger is pointing out where to place your hook for the second stitch.) At the end, you’ll have two rows of single crochet stitch, like in the above photo. Just remember your final single crochet of a row will be worked into the turning chain at the start of the previous row. This is something that becomes important when you do taller crochet stitches. Insert the hook so it’s always going under the two legs of the V on the top of the stitch. If you have 20 stitches in the first row, there should be 20 in rows two and three (and so on).

Count as you go, beginning with that turning chain. If you get to the end of the row and you don’t have the right number, you know you have to go back and work again. Soon you’ll be a pro at increasing and decreasing, working different loops and making taller basic stitches, like double and treble crochet.
