I have quite a few kindle guidebooks and none of the others have had this problem. The maps are so low quality (eg Stockholm city maps) that when you try and enlarge the minute print, all definition is lost and the map becomes illegible. The Rough Guide does neither. A guidebook without legible maps is useless.The book uses lots of what I assume are colours for headers, hotel and restaurant names, etc. Of course, the Kindle being black and white, these show up as light grey and barely legible. The maps are impossible to read as well. On top of that, the book lacks a language section- I am not expecting a full phrasebook but every guidebook worth its money should contain the basic phrases, greetings, etc. Returned for a refund.I agree Swedish history can be confusing, but the historical overviews were flawed. While it contains many tips for saving money, learning something about the country I was visiting would have been helpful too. Only for those on an extremely tight budget who are trekking off into the wilderness.Perhaps it is, perhaps it is not, but the part about the third largest city, Malmo, in the south of the country, is clearly not updated after 2000.

There is no information about the big real estate exihibition held in 2001, nor the township that emerged following the exibition. Restaurants and bars are abundant in the area, and therefore the area should be of great interest to tourist. Its location by the waterfront, with its own marina and established swimming ground, makes it one of the most attractive places in the summer. The clearest landmark in Malmo, The Turning Torso (264 metres, finished 2005) is in the same area, and also not mentioned in the book. How all of this could have been overseen in a book that came out 2006, I do not undersstand. In addition, most of the restaurants mentioned in the Malmo section have changed names or simply does not exist anymore. Since Malmo only takes up about 12 pages of the book, I can not give a comprehensive review. Some of the other parts of the book might be more updated, but for what I have read about Malmo, I definately do not recommned this book.Planning a trip again in a couple of months, so I ordered the latest version published in 2012. This book, like everything else in today's economy, has been scaled back but sold at the same price, so we get less product. It is not as helpful and actually quite frustrating. I know my older versions (which I no longer have) had more pages and information, and the maps were better. Perhaps the publisher or author feel the Internet will balance the lack of information, I don't know, but this version is very disappointing.Since I have downloaded this onto my iPad I can easily use it for reference while in Sweden. I also like the way the author sectioned off areas and included maps.Well laid out and easy to use. I think all the Rough Guides are great to have.However this has not been revised since 2012 and all the prices are way out therefore useless for budgetting your trip. E.G. airport bus at Kiruna is listed at 45 SK it is in fact now 100 SK double the price.

The same with prices at Kebenakaise Mountain station and other hostels. So good for reference but not for pricing. The pictures and information are so user-friendly, and so helpful, you're ready to pack your bags and leave for the airport. The maps are clear (both the regional maps and the city maps) and vibrant, as are the photos. This isn't the only travel book about Scandinavia, but it sure seems to be one of the better ones. It's a little more expensive for a paperback but well worth it for all you get.

As of this writing, the 8th edition of the book came out in July 2009, so the information is still relatively current. And the fact that there have been 8 editions means they've both had a chance to get it right as well as find out what readers think. I still prefer paper for travel, even I have to print it myself. We made our way from the airport Shinjuku, took the bullet train to Kyoto and back, all without a word of Japanese. The guide was insightful and the only one I packed with us. The extra information packed in on culture and locals is worth the price, and does not ever get outdated.So I again bought both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide. This is my last time, from now on Rough Guide it is. The best thing about the guide is that it organizes information in a way that makes planning very easy. Overview of country, overview of region, overview of town. I planned my two week trip in a matter of hours. Lonely Planet, in contrast, essentially lists places, one after the other. Unless you follow one of their 5-8 itineraries, the only way you plan your trip is reading the book cover-to-cover. Also, a friend of mine lived in Japan for 10 years. All the tips he gave me were in the Rough Guide.Granted, you really can't use this book alone, but for what it is, its good.It's an OK guidebook. It provides you with the essentials. For Hagi, the guidebook listed only a few restaurants, none of them worth mentioning - in a city renowned for its excellent seafood. Quite a few budget accommodation options were also missing from the guidebook. And for Tokyo, the guidebook recommended some old, bedbug-ridden, smelly Ryokan among its options.And I found this book to be good for just that. Japan is way too big and interesting to fit in such a small book, though. You'll find Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka in depth with way too little about most other places. Not really much else to say. It's a guidebook. Rough Guides seem to be better than LP, but slowly deteriorating as any big guidebook company will inevitably do.

Too many updated versions with too few updates, but at least you get the feeling they have actually been there before.I would recommend a lonely planet over this guide. It was too thick to carry anywhere, and the pages felt like thin tissue paper. I never took this out of my hotel room and preferred my Lonely Planet for all tips and touring.It provides useful historic information of locals that we were interested. What I found the most useful was the transportation guides to the locals. We never got lost. The hotel and dining info was a bit limited, but it was a good start. I highly recommend this book to people who are traveling to Japan. If you're doing a self-tour for more than a week, make sure that you get the JR Rail Pass before you head to Japan. I'll now get the rough guides for Australia and New Zealand.Pretty much all one can get from a teenager nowadays.Having been to Japan quite often and speaking the language on a conversational level, I can say that this book is full of tips that the locals would give you. You'll not visit geography and nature more awesome and pristine than here. anywhere. 2) There's a price to pay for all of this loveliness: Scandinavia is the most expensive tourist destination in the world. The capital cities are hilariously expensive. What you pay in Stockholm and Oslo will be twice what you pay in Paris, four times what you pay in Prague, and ten time what you pay in Riga. 3) Three words: white, clean, and neat. Now, the book. There are 800 pages to get into the four countries that make Scandinavia. That's kind of like condensing world history down to one volume: There's the inevitable Wikipedia effect. People already familiar with Scandinavia will find the context a bit summary, but people new to the region will probably feel overwhelmed by the grandeur, rich history, and somewhat oppressive homogeneity.

It's hard to please everyone, but this guide tries hard to fit into the gap between local comprehensiveness and general knowledge. I love this, but some readers will really hate it. If you want more detailed, pragmatic information, Bradt is probably the way to go. If you want more historic and cultural context, you'll need to buy a narrative history to complement this guide, though this history sections in this guide are particularly well done. Here's the point: Knowing that the British navy blew Copenhagen into oblivion in 1807 is not only one of history's great ironies, but reveals a critically important insight about the incredible accomplishments of the Danes since then. This guide will frame the issue for you without boring you with contrived or conjectural detail. Of course, there's emphasis on the capital cities here. Stockholm and Copenhagen, despite their relatively small sizes (each about a fifth the size of London or Paris), are so rich with sites, bites, walks, drinks, parks, boats, trains, shops, churches, palaces and universities that a quick tour around town will get your attention like a punch in the mouth. Helsinki, being relatively young by European standards, contains the most comprehensive ensemble of neoclassical and distinguished modern architecture you'll find in Europe. But one of the really nice things about this guide is that it gives you complete portraits of important towns OUTSIDE the capitals that you might otherwise, and unfortunately, overlook: Uppsala, Visby and Lund in Sweden; Arhus, Denmark; Bergen, Norway; and Turku, Finland are worth the journeys. In fact, they may even be the highlights of your trip. The density of life and institutions in Scandinavian cities are both exhilarating and frustrating. You'll feel anxious and stunned. Copenhagen is compact enough to get your mind around, but Stockholm and Oslo are real mind-benders.

So, knowing this beforehand, get your eyeballs into this book and make some sense of it all before you fall in. You can put some organization into this vast land of steeples and fjords. Take it with you to keep yourself focused, or do what I do: Spend about an hour over coffee each morning blowing through the text and maps, make some mental notes, and leave the guide in the hotel room. Then get yourself lost in the streets. Rough Guides are better pre-read than on-the-fly. I like to travel that way, so I love these books. There are some problems with this book. This is particularly unfortunate in a guide to Scandinavia, the source of many of the world's great cinematic masterpieces.
