If the fan motor fails, then it's toast, and only time will tell how good the quality is. But I got mine via the Amazon Warehouse Deals, at a big discount off the new price; obviously a return from all of you who bought this as a poor man's air conditioner LOL, so I didn't pay anywhere near new price. Mine works fine, as I expect any swamp cooler to work. And most importantly, it works in my environment, which is the key point to begin with. So before you consider buying this or ANY evaporative cooler, DO YOUR RESEARCH and find out if a swamp cooler works in your enviroment to begin with. Then KNOW that an evaporative IS NOT a cheap air conditioner. Because in the end, the technnology is the same; very simple.However, the swamp doesn't reach all the way back to my bedroom, and the AC costs way too much to run all the time. It does not work in humid environments and it does not replicate the results of an AC. Don't expect it to. It does keep my bedroom cool, circulate the air, and moisten the air. It probably isn't right for your area. -If it leaks, make sure it is level, don't over fill it, and don't move it when it is full. I put mine on a storage tub because I want it to blow on my bed, but my bed was too high. I filled it full and some water leaked because it wasn't level. When I moved it into another room that I was doing some cleaning and organizing, it was too full and I could hear it sloshing around and a bit of water came out. -It will not bring a 120 degrees down to 80. It will maintain a 80 degree, and it will cool 120 degrees down to about 100. When I turn it on in the morning it will keep my bedroom cool through out the day, but if I turn it on at 4 pm when it is baking hot outside and stuffy and hot inside, it won't cool off the bedroom until about 9 at night. It isn't magic and it can only do so much.As many of the other reviews said, it doesn't cool a room at all,it just cools the space directly in front of it. If you are purchasing this product solely for the purpose of it being used in a small room then its worth it. My reason for giving it 3 stars instead of 4 is because it does shoot out water from the vent on the lower left side when you first turn on the cooler option (maybe for a minute) if you are putting it on carpet I would not recommend this product. As I put the unit away for the winter, I'll go back to the manual to see if it says anything about that, but there is nothing on the unit itself that would indicate to me how to access the holding tank area to clean it (it all seems like one solid piece of equipment.
