The Preptorial Foundation, Inc. 3.0 out of 5 stars The Kelby Training site not only fails to correct errata as other reviewers have stated, but the excellent videos (on how the cover was created, for example) abruptly END in the middle of the author's tutorial. Publishers need to become more aware that if they charge a LOT for a thin book, they BETTER make the web complement outstanding. Buyers of this book DESERVE a good web experience to complement this expensive a purchase, and especially this important and specialized a title (there are over 1,000 books on Photoshop and hundreds of Lynda videos, but this is rare coverage of a key and difficult topic-- layers.

If a publisher wants to compete with the thousands of videos on Youtube and other educational sites (for example, O'reilly and Pearson both do outstanding web additions to many of their software titles), they really have to do a better job of extending web tutorials to purchasers of books like this, and then doing them with enough quality that the reader can actually finish the video. BTW, the parts of the videos that DID make it to Kelby's site are by the author and are outstanding! When I first started reading it, I thought it was too basic for me, but luckily, I kept reading. Yes, it has the very basic concepts of layers, but it has WAY more too. I made several breakthroughs with this book, which is a major accomplishment for me. I usually feel like a book is worth it if I find one really worthwhile technique. I have 12 pages dog-eared so that I can get back to them quickly, and of course highlighting throughout the book. I loved the layout of the book. It is broken into 10 chapters that have subchapters within. The subchapters are short, less than 10 pages each, and have LOTS of graphics showing the screen he is referring to. There were a few times that I wished he'd shown another screen that he was referring to, but overall he showed what he was discussing. The text is brief and to the point without the mindless detail that kills some Photoshop books. I didn't think about rasterizing a text layer so I could add filters, gradients, or use a brush on them, now I will. His layer style discussions were great. These were just a few of my favs. Some of these things may be familiar to you, especially if you watch Photoshop User TV the podcast as I do. But I still found the book quite helpful. There were a few things I didn't like about the book, for instance, he uses the eraser tool in situations where I would use a layer mask, since a mask would be less destructive. So maybe it's what you are used to, but I would teach masks when at all possible.
I use the highpass filter as he describes all the time, but I have it as a recorded action, so it is easy for me. I own Topaz, I just don't use it that much. I really struggled over what rating to give this book, because I normally save my 5 stars for books that I consider perfect, and there were, as I mentioned, things I disagreed with in this book. But I liked the book so much, and would recommend it to any of my friends, that I decided it deserves 5 stars. This is a book that I will refer back to and study and incorporate many of his techniques, and where possible, automate them! These have led to a powerful, complex tool that is tough to master. I have struggled to get a handle on layers and masks and associated tools for years. Following a procedure isn't enough for me. I need to know how and why it works. Matt does a great job with the book. It is written as a tutorial, sort of a script or lecture. He goes into great detail explaining all aspects of layers and associated tools. Don't expect to go through this book in one evening. For me, to get the most out of the material, I treat it as a college course. I read the material, highlight important concepts in the book, making my own notes in a separate composition notebook; review my notes and then do the lab work. That way, one could repeat the process over and over without reading and rereading comments and other material. Also, the keyboard short-cuts are great but don't tell me what is happening. Tell me what you're doing; tell me the short-cut; after I've mastered and understanding the process, I will then learn the short-cut. All and all, this is what I have been looking for.So far I have yet to come across I book I consider to be the definitive guide, but this one certainly demystifies the use of Layers, which is the aspect of Photoshop that stands it apart from other photo-editing software.
On the whole, there are very clear explanations of how to achieve specific effects, ranging from very simple to quite complex. Like any book on a huge topic, the coverage is not exhaustive and some chapters are better than others, but there are certainly hours of entertainment to be had from working through it. There are two reasons why I did not give it five stars. The first one, which at least one of the other reviews here highlights, is that not everything described in the text correlates precisely with what appears on the screen, and there were a couple of times I just could not get the programme to do what the book seemed to intend it to. The second point, and this may be related, is that you are supposed to be able to download the pictures used in the book from the Kelby publishing website, so that you can work through the examples. I found that the downloads were simply not there when you try to access them, which means that you need to work with your own photos and are therefore never quite sure if you have followed the instructions perfectly. I have found the absent downloads to be a feature of some of the other Kelby publishing books I have purchased, such as the HDR Book by Rafael Concepcion, so I suspect they are only available for a limited period following publication. Consequently it is not perfect, but it is pretty good.As a relative newcomer to Photoshop, and keen to improve my skills, I found working with the book an absolute pleasure. There are downloadable files for the user to manipulate in the chapters, and each chapter delivers the subject matter in a simple and easy to follow manner, unlike many so-called self-help books I have used. Within a few chapters I was designing my own fliers and brochures that I had previously employed a designer to do for me. That in itself repays the cost of the book. I would heartily recommend this to anyone wishing to get to grips with layers in Photoshop.
The book lends itself to doing exactly that as it flows as a whole series of projects, introducing new techniques as you go. To get yourself off and running you go to the book's website and download all the various images - chapter by chapter and off you go. I like the fact that not only does the book teach you about the use of layers, how they blend and interact, it also introduces really important single issues as well - for example the specific use of text - how to set text up, how to create effects, pick colours, position and so forth. So this is an enjoyable book, presented with humour and with a gradual increase in skills and challenges and it is one that you will want to keep on the bookshelf to remind yourself about how to do this and that. If layers are not quite something that you are comfortable with then I highly recommend this as an instructive and fun way to learn. And I've tried quite a few over the years. The format lets you follow the written information by using online images to match those on the page, so you are actually working alongside the book and creating each effect on your own screen as you go along. It has really helped me understand the difference between the different types of layers and how to use them effectively. I am trying to work my way through the whole book and am only half way so far but my Photoshop skills are noticibly improved and I'm actually enjoying learning by doing. So yes, a very good buy. Recomended! After the first couple of chapters my understanding of layers has been enormously enhanced. Unlike one of the other reviewers, I like the step by step approach. Very useful to have access to the photos online used in the examples.Amazon is not legally responsible for the accuracy of the tags represented. Z Ricarditich 5.0 out of 5 stars It was a revelation. If you read this book and do the clearly illustrated and explained exercises, you will have a working knowledge of layers and masks (and various other postprocessing aids). No other book is needed. Since I learn best by writing my own tutorials, that's what I did here (using Word), so that I would not have to refer to the book each time I wanted to employ some routine I had learned from studying the book. I would strongly advise you to do the same. The mere writing of the tutorial burns the knowledge into your mind and tests your true understanding of what you read. I am a user of Elements 6, but virtually all of the devices used in Photoshop work in Elements 6 (though some have different names that are not too difficult to figure out).
There is a site from which you can download a layer mask button to Elements 6, and I did so, but I don't use it, preferring instead to use the above routine. Summary: this is the book that opens up the world of image postprocessing.I use Photoshop (with Adobe Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw) primarily to process my digital photos, but I also use it to restore old or damaged photos. I'm very comfortable with layers, layer masks, and blend modes and use layers frequently in my mostly nondestructive workflow. As my knowledge and experience increase, I find each new Photoshop or photo editing book contains less and less material that is new and interesting to me, i.e., the law of diminishing returns. I've enjoyed Matt Kloskowski and his style in his podcasts and Killer Tips videos, so I decided to give his Layers book a try. The book does contain some basic topics but it also covers some advanced topics, and I definitely learned enough to make this book worth the money and worth the time to work through the exercises in each chapter. The best way to use the book is to download the exercise files and work through them as you read each chapter. I personally got the most benefit from the chapters on Type and Shape Layers and on Layer Styles. You experience will certainly be different. I do, however, have a couple of nits for Matt. In several of the examples throughout the book he specifies an RGB color by giving the numerical values for R, G, and B, but he does not specify the color space as sRGB, Adobe RGB, or ProPhoto RGB. The same numbers define different colors in these color spaces. My other nit is for the examples in Chapter 8 - Some More Layer Style Ideas. Matt presents several interesting effects and gives very specific size and distance pixel values in the dialog boxes, but he doesn't give the pixel dimensions of the object to which he's applying the layer style. This made trying to follow his examples in this chapter very difficult for me.
{-Variable.fc_1_url-
If my guess at the object size was off from his, the effects did not work very well or were very overdone. It would be very helpful to have exercise files for these examples. These are minor nits and do not change my recommendation to buy this book. So, while I was comfortable with some of the basics, I had never really been able to grasp layers and how to use them. I'm working my way through the book now and it has made such a difference. I'm finally truly grasping how layers work and how to make them work for me. I The book is well laid out, easy to follow and not overwhelming or intimidating in size. I also love that the photos used in the examples are available for easy download online. There have been a few spots where I got a bit confused and had to reread and play around a little to figure out what I needed to do (or had done wrong), but I was always able to get back on track quickly. Generally, it was because I had the wrong layer active - duh. While I use the keyboard shortcuts that Matt suggests for each step, I also take the time to figure out how to do the same thing in the menus. I know I won't remember all of the shortcuts, so figure it's good to be comfortable doing things either way. Wish I'd purchased this years ago. I can't say enough good things.I got this book to introduce my fiance to the power of layers in Photoshop. This book is the perfect book for anyone wanting to learn how much can be accomplished by mastering layers. Each chapter builds on the one before and the projects are well illustrated and explained clearly. Matt chooses pictures to work with that inspire creativity. There are more pictures available on his website for projects, or you can just use your own. Contrary to some of the negative reviewers comments, I find Matt's conversational writing style warm and inviting. If you are put off by levity while learning then go buy one of those dry and boring books and avoid this one.
But if you're looking for a book that takes the intimidation factor out of what could be a daunting skill-set to master then this book is the one for you!Obviously this is a Photoshop book which actually has been around for some time but, it is still very relevant and not reliant on which particular version of PS you are using because 'layers' are a fundamental element of Photoshop. The layout is in bite sized techniques that cover very few pages so easy to use. So if you haven't properly exploited layers up to now or feel a bit intimidated by them, this is a very good place to start. Matt Kloskowski who often works with Scott Kelby is a very good tutor. For such times a book like this is invaluable, take the book off the shelf and look it up, a gift that keeps on giving. Then every once in a while a book comes along which assumes you have a little basic knowledge (but are not a total novice) and then takes you to places that you never dreamed possible on a journey that seems effortless. And it's full of such tutorials, it makes learning a real pleasure. Yes it's written in the upfront personal American style, but I've read much much worse. Although written for CS3 I used it with CS4 with no problems at all and although there will be no doubt additions for later versions I suspect the base content will last you for a long time.Matt Kloskowski, an acknowledged Photoshop expert, has a friendly and engaging style (some might find the humour a little grating but I'm not bothered by that), and shows how to do a lot of creative things with Photoshop layers in an easy-to-understand way. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to explore layers without having their brain cells overloaded by technical stuff.A book that just shows you - and then expects you to go away and practice on your own work never quite matches up. This gives you everything you need. Well written, easy to understand, and written in a very approachable style. If I can do it, you can to!!

Well written, easy to understand, and written in a very approachable style. If I can do it, you can to!!Good for all from beginner to advanced users. I wish I had found it earlier. A must have in my opinion for the book shelf over or along side your computer. One of my best investments after Photoshop that is. I find that books are so much better at explaining processes than videos and one can refer to a book at any time. Matt does a fantastic job of breaking down seemingly complex ideas and projects into easy to swallow bites. I would highly recommed it to other Photoshop newbies. However, like most of his books, Kloskowski gives good solid information, but never dives deeper into more complex usage. In very easy and basic steps u begin to learn the secret of layers till the full power use of layers as a pro. Thank u kloskowski:D It starts relatively simply, and you ask what the big deal is. Then, he starts to unveil the magic. I will re read the book, as a proper tutorial, and do the exercises as i go along.
Simply brilliant It is highly recommended for both new and not-so-new Photoshop users. It works well with CS6, too. I am almost tempted to give it a 6 star rating!
