BlueWing 2.0 out of 5 stars I am not a mechanic by any means and rely on online videos and manuals to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs. The Haynes Brake Manual was good for a novice attempting to understand the basics of drum brake systems in order to repair and replace brakes on my boat trailer. I found the manual to be dated material and good for a general overview of the mechanics of braking.
http://www.flowprofile.it/userfiles/breville-super-wizz-duo-electronic-m...

The manual alone was not sufficient enough for me to address removing the frozen brakes on the trailer and to analyze the condition of the hydraulics which were leaking and the master cylinder was empty and rusty. Online videos from You Tube provided much better instruction and information to meet my requirements. I would only recommend this manual to someone who wants to understand the basic mechanics and not for actual brake work.Any mechanicaly inclined individual with a decently detailed book like this Haynes manual on brakes can do the job. The book contains specific information about the brake system, different components and specifications of different car manufacturers brake systems. Doing the occasional brake job is not difficult, remembering all of the small things sometimes escapes one. Reading a book like this one a couple of days before doing the job will prime your mind with all kinds of information and fine points of doing a great brake job. I did not think I would like the book because brakes are a dull subject, but the book makes interesting reading when you are in need of a refresher course on brakes. The book came a day early from Bookoodles, packed extremely well, could not believe how they did it. The one thing that was a surprise was that I ordered a USED book in good condition.. What I got was a new unused book still sealed in its plastic sleeve. Can't beat that with a sitck for the 5 dollars it cost me. Happy Shopping on AmazonAlthough the manual may look a bit dated, but if you are looking for an instructional guide to help walk you through the process of brake maintenance or replacement, this is the guide for you.Do not expect to find EXACT information on your vehicle. This technical manual is very easy to understand. Yes, I would recommend this manual!Sorry, we failed to record your vote. However, some vehicles may have been manufactured with a brake pedal which did not incorporate grooves or the fitting of an anti-slip material and these should not be rejected. However, you should not reject a brake pedal if the vehicle has been manufactured with one that does not have grooves or anti-slip material. It is not a defect if the design pattern of the brake pedal rubber is worn smooth. Checks on vehicles with power-assisted braking systems should be carried out with the engine off. In such cases the extent of reserve travel should be assessed during the brake test. Pressure build-up is considered satisfactory if the warning device stops operating within: It is not a defect unless the warning light stays on after the engine has been started. Testers should be aware of this throughout the test. However, the mechanism for keeping the brakes applied is usually within brake calliper or motor gear assembly and therefore not easy to see. However, they may be used to assist the application or release of a mechanical brake. Reservoir caps should not be removed. Class 3 vehicles are not inspected for brake fluid warning lamp. It must be done with care so that any protective coating does not get damaged. If you are not sure whether the pipe is sufficiently deteriorated to justify rejection, you should give the benefit of the doubt. Other pads may have a cut, which if worn away indicates that the pad must be replaced.

Being worn below the manufacturer’s recommended limits is not a reason in itself. You should take into account any additional information from the vehicle manufacturer. However, if the number of wheel locks are not achieved for any system on a non-ATL RBT, a decelerometer test must be used to establish the overall brake efficiency of the relevant system(s). In these circumstances, the vehicle should be treated as having an unknown test weight. The brake force used in the efficiency calculation is the total from all wheels when operated by that control only. Additional braking devices, such as electronic retarders, should not be operated during the brake test. If the vehicle or system is unsuitable, it should be tested with a decelerometer. If a vehicle is ejected from the brake rollers, the required brake efforts may not be achieved. In such cases the test should be repeated in manual mode, running each roller individually. With the rollers still running, note whether a significant brake effort is recorded from any wheel without a brake being applied. Stopping short of lock up or maximum effort, hold a steady pedal pressure and check there is no excessive brake effort fluctuation with each revolution of the road wheel. Stop the rollers. Stop the rollers if they have not stopped automatically. However, if the rollers are run together and the vehicle fails to meet the minimum performance requirement, the test must be repeated running the rollers individually. Do not stop on the tester. Take note of the way the brake efforts fluctuate.

However, when this is not the case, such as for tricycles and quadricycles or if MTS is not working, you must calculate the brake imbalance against the maximum brake efforts on each axle in the following way: Or in the case of testing on the road, the vehicle deviates excessively from a straight line (ii) the braking effort from any wheel is less than 50 of the maximum effort recorded from the other wheel on a steered axle Otherwise, take the weight from a weight data chart or some other reliable source. On vehicles where only the ULW is displayed, you must calculate the DGW by multiplying the number of passenger seats by 63.5kg (or 140lbs) and adding the ULW, for example: The MOT testing service will automatically calculate brake efficiency and out of balance results. The MOT testing service will automatically pass or fail the vehicle on brake efficiency. If the secondary brake is also the park brake then there is no need to carry out a separate park brake test. As soon as the minimum efficiency requirement is reached the brake testing must cease to avoid any possible damage. Stop the rollers if they have not stopped automatically. Or in the case of testing on the road, the vehicle deviates excessively from a straight line. (ii) the braking effort from any wheel is less than 50 of the maximum effort recorded from the other wheel on a steered axle For details see Section 1.3.1 and 1.3.2. As soon as the minimum efficiency requirement is reached the brake testing must cease to avoid any possible damage. In such cases a gradient test must be carried out. Stop the rollers if they have not stopped automatically. The service brake may be used to assist in setting the parking brake. A particular public road should not be used for tests so frequently that it could cause complaints from residents. For details see Section 1.3.1 and 1.3.2. However, they must have a parking brake that can prevent at least two wheels from turning.

They do not need to meet a specified efficiency requirement. It is not necessary to drive the vehicle to carry out this inspection. This can cause the ABS system to indicate a fault which may require specialist equipment to rectify. This does not apply to sensor rings or other ABS components which are an integral part of another component, such as a brake disc or drive shaft. On many vehicles, you will not be able to see if the brake fluid is contaminated. You should only fail a vehicle if you can clearly see that the fluid is contaminated. Function A faint electric motor noise can be heard when the electrically-controlled parking brake is being applied.
{-Variable.fc_1_url-

The noise can also be heard during the automatic function checking of the parking brake. If the car is stationary when the parking brake is applied then it only acts on the rear wheels. If it is applied when the car is moving then the normal foot brake is used, i.e. the brake acts on all four wheels. Brake function changes over to the rear wheels when the car is almost stationary. Low battery voltage If the battery voltage is too low then the parking brake can neither be released nor applied. Connect a donor battery if the battery voltage is too low, see Jump starting with another battery. Applying the parking brake Your browser does not support the video tag. Parking brake control - apply. Depress the foot brake pedal firmly. Press the parking brake control. The combined instrument panel's symbol starts flashing - once there is a constant glow the parking brake is applied. Release the foot brake pedal and make sure that the car is at a standstill position. When parking the vehicle, always engage 1st gear (for manual gearbox) or put the gear selector in position P (for automatic gearbox). Emergency brake In an emergency the parking brake can be applied when the vehicle is in motion by pressing and holding the parking brake control. The braking procedure is stopped when the control is released. Note An acoustic signal sounds while emergency braking is active at high speeds. Parking on a hill If the car is parked facing uphill: Turn the wheels away from the kerb. If the car is parked facing downhill: Turn the wheels towards the kerb. Warning Always apply the parking brake when parking on a slope - leaving the car in gear, or in P if it has automatic transmission, is not sufficient to hold the car in all situation. Disengaging the parking brake Parking brake control - release. Apply the parking brake control. The parking brake releases and the combined instrument panel's symbol extinguishes.

Note The parking brake can also be released manually by depressing the clutch pedal instead of the brake pedal. Volvo recommends that the brake pedal is used. Releasing automatically Start the engine. Engage 1st gear or reverse gear. Ease up the clutch and depress the accelerator. The parking brake releases and the combined instrument panel's symbol extinguishes. Pull the control. The parking brake releases and the combined instrument panel's symbol extinguishes. Releasing automatically Put the seatbelt on. Start the engine. Depress the foot brake pedal firmly. Move the gear selector to position D or R and depress the accelerator. The parking brake releases and the combined instrument panel's symbol extinguishes. Note For safety reasons, the parking brake is only released automatically if the engine is running and the driver is wearing a seatbelt. The parking brake is released immediately on cars with automatic gearbox when the accelerator pedal is depressed and the gear selector is in position D or R. Heavy load uphill A heavy load, such as a trailer, can cause the car to roll backward when the parking brake is released automatically on a steep incline. Avoid this by depressing the control while driving off. Release the control when the engine achieves traction. Replacing the brake linings The rear brake linings must be replaced at a workshop due to the design of the electric parking brake - an authorised Volvo workshop is recommended. Symbols and messages For information on how the combined instrument panel's text messages can be shown and deleted, see Messages - handling. A flashing symbol indicates that the parking brake is applied. If the symbol flashes in any other situation then this means that a fault has arisen. Read the combined instrument panel's message. Handbrake not fully released A fault is preventing the parking brake from being released: Try to apply and release the brake.

If the fault persists after a few attempts: Visit a workshop - an authorised Volvo workshop is recommended. Note: A warning signal sounds if the journey is continued with this error message. Handbrake not applied A fault is preventing the parking brake from being applied: Try to release and apply the brake. If the fault persists after a few attempts: Visit a workshop - an authorised Volvo workshop is recommended. The message is also illuminated on cars with manual gearbox when the car is driven at low speed with the door open in order to alert the driver that the parking brake may have been unintentionally disengaged. Handbrake Service required A fault has arisen: Try to apply and release the brake. If the fault persists after a few attempts: Visit a workshop - an authorised Volvo workshop is recommended. If the car has to be parked before a possible fault has been rectified, then the wheels must be turned as if parking on a hill and 1st gear engaged (manual gearbox) or the gear selector must be in position P (automatic gearbox). A text message can be acknowledged by briefly pressing the OK button on the direction indicator stalk. Related articles Foot brake Did this help. If you do not intend to start driving the vehicle immediately, shift the shift lever to the neutral position for a manual transmission, or shift the selector lever to the P or N position for an automatic transmission. When the driver releases the brake pedal and depresses the accelerator pedal while on a slope, the function prevents the vehicle from rolling.

The braking force is maintained automatically after the brake pedal is released on a steep grade. The system only operates for about two seconds and therefore, relying only on the system, when accelerating from a stop is dangerous because the vehicle may move (roll) unexpectedly and cause an accident. In addition, for vehicles with a manual transaxle, the vehicle could still roll depending on how the clutch pedal or the accelerator pedal is operated. In addition, the gradient of the slope on which the system will operate changes depending on the vehicle's load. Best tool I’ve bought this year and will make sure brake fluid is in tip top condition. Brakes now feel very progressive - where they were wooden before. If your wife would rather not help, or you have kids that need looking after, this tool makes bleeding brakes a one man job. Directions. Use a turkey baster to get out as much old fluid as you can before topping up the reservoir with fresh fluid, fIll up the bleeder with fresh brake fluid, attach the cap to the brake fluid reservoir and pump it up to 2Bar, bleeding callipers one at a time (tube and pot not included, I bought a diy brake bleed kit from Halfords and chopped off the little ball bearing nrv.) the laser tool adds fresh fluid as the system is bled so you just need to focus on keeping the pressure at 2Bar, and making sure your fluid is clear and bubble free. Used it yesterday to bleed the brakes on my Kuga. It literally took about 3mins per wheel it is that good. If you've ever tried to bleed brakes the old fashioned way.its crazy. This tool makes it so easy, its unreal. I've tried other ones.this is the best yet.

Forget those stupid old fashioned ones that require a spare wheel at a certain pressure. This is far superior. Just don't do what I did and forget to monitor the fluid level whilst talking to someone and bleeding, and ending up running the bleeder empty and sending a whole lot of air through your brakes. I successfully and quickly changed the brake fluid which enhanced the performance of my brakes. Thanks and Best Regards. We don't carry spacres. For individual vehicles it is best to check with your vehicle handbook.
