Our products are used daily in every part of the world by networks, stations and program producers. Every product we manufacture has been carefully designed to function flawlessly, under the harshest conditions, over many years of use. BRIC-Link II may be used over a range of IP links, is very simple to use, and doesn’t require the expense of more full-featured codecs. While it carries an entry-level cost, BRIC-Link II maintains superb audio specifications and hardware reliability, making the system suitable for STLs and other mission-critical functions. Finally, BRIC-Link II can act as a streaming audio server. In this mode, BRIC-Link II is capable of delivering many HE-AAC streams that are compatible with computer-based media players like WinAmp and VLC. InPuts In mono encode modes, BRIC-Link II uses the left channel of the stereo input for delivery to the mono encoder.Inputs are triggered by shorting the respective input to Pin 9. Outputs consist of an open collector circuit which, when inactive, will offer a high-impedance path to Pin 9 and, when active, will offer a low impedance path to Pin 9. A normal patch cord, such as one used for a computer, should be connected here. In most ways, BRIC-Link II will look like an ordinary computer to the network. In fact, BRIC-Link II contains an embedded computer with a Linux-based operating system and a full network protocol stack. If this is not possible, you may need to connect an Ethernet crossover cable between the BRIC-Link II and the computer for configuration. This is done by pointing a web browser on your LAN to the BRIC-Link II IP address. To do this, simply type the address into the URL bar of your browser. You will need Internet Explorer 6 or higher or Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher with Adobe Flash Plug-in 7 or higher. Tabs - Use these tabs to control and obtain status of BRIC-Link II. They are de- scribed in detail in the next four sections.

An input box will appear allowing you to enter a user name (which can be anything) and the IP address of the unit. All audio meters are defaulted to Off when BRIC-Link II is first enabled. This is because transfer of audio level information consumes bandwidth on the local network, as well as CPU cycles on the client computer. These other choices are defined in the Advanced Topics section. Note: It’s important to define the channel of a profile before moving on to other options, since the choices in the subsequent sections will vary in this choice. The default value of the remote encoder is to follow the local encoder (i.e., it will send exactly the same codec mode it receives). But there are occasions where a network will treat UDP packets poorly. Normally in this mode, connections are requested on an incoming basis so no outgoing profile setup is required. During the squelch period, the buffer manager ignored the relative jitter experienced and does not adjust buffer size to compensate. Jitter Window - This parameter defines the amount of time (in minutes) that historical network performance is analyzed in order to make the rest of the calculations. Examples are how incoming calls are handled, codec name and how the contact closures are assigned. The System Settings tab is shown in Figure 11.This port is always active during an IP connection and allows serial data transfer along the same path used for the audio data. Note that since most BRIC-Link II codecs attempt a connection on this port number, changing it can mean the BRIC-Link II in the field must dial specifically to your new port number in order to connect. An outgoing call must be made to a specific port number in the form of. The SIP protocol is assuming no ports are forwarded and may have trouble connecting without this function enabled. We will assume that the network and audio connections have been made.

Before you can establish an outgoing connection on BRIC-Link II, you must enter the info about remote connection into the Connections tab. BRIC-Link II includes several common default profiles to choose from, each of which enable a simple full-duplex link using one of the available algorithms. For incoming connections, the password is set on the System Settings tab. There is no way to retrieve a forgotten password; it must simply be changed in each BRIC-Link II. It will be helpful to describe a little bit about the BRIC-Link II data transfer protocol before describing how to set the system up. This is called Fallback, and is an option chosen after defining a new Remote connection. There is also a box in the Change Remote Settings tab labeled Automatically fall forward. If this box is checked, the system will constantly attempt to reconnect the primary remote while connected to the fallback remote. When building a profile, there are several choices of encoders to use for each direction of the link. Here’s a description of the choices: This algorithm is a highly regarded standard for compressing audio to critical listening standards. It has been judged to produce “near transparent”. This means that the audio extracted from the decoder is identical to the audio input to the encoder, with no coding artifacts. FLAC typically removes 30-40 of the network data compared to Linear PCM, but the actual data rate is variable and is based on the complexity of the coded audio. BRIC-Link II A is the multi-streamer, with BRIC-Link II B, C and D listening to the same audio. In order to set up a multi-stream scenario, you will need to know how to turn BRIC-Link II encoders Off. This must be done by building a profile with either the Local or Return Transmitter mode set to Off, as shown in Figure 16. This involves relying on the network to distribute the stream to the locations that require it, rather than creating an independent stream for each user.

The default value of TTL in BRIC-Link II is 0, which limits its use to within a LAN environment.Currently tested media players include WinAmp, VLC and Windows Media Player 12 and up. By default, streaming server functionality is turned off. To enable it, go to the System Settings tab of the User Interface and choose HTTP Settings option. If the BRIC connection is using an AAC algorithm supported by players, when a stream is requested it will be delivered using the same encoder as the BRIC connection, regardless of the HTTP settings. Aside from this, BRIC-Link II has been tested to be compatible with several other manufacturer’s devices using encoders supported by both products. If a connection is to be made exclusively within a domain, the domain name can be left off.The status will reflect the progress of the registration process. When complete, this will display Online. If the box does not display Online after a short time, it means that registration likely failed. The address field, regardless of whether it is a SIP URI or an IP address, is forwarded to the server. No connection attempt is made until the server responds. Changing this port to 5004 can actually have an adverse effect, since 5004 is the default port for other services on Comrex codecs. Public IP Override - See the next section, SIP Troubleshooting, for more information on this option. But any codec sitting behind a router has a private IP address, and has no idea what the public address is. So, naturally, it will put its private IP address (e.g. In our simple description, we left out the fact that ports are being translated by the router as well as IP addresses. If the ALG-enabled router receives an unexpected result in the SIP address field (as it might if using STUN), it may not translate ports as expected, and it’s likely that the call will fail. We retain the right to charge a small handling fee for distribution of this software.

These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial en- vironment. This product is compliant with the. The choice is exclusive i.e. you must set the BRIC-Link II specifically for the type of stream you wish to be compatible with, and you will remain incompatible with the other two types until you change it. This setting has no effect on normal BRIC-Link II functions, which continue to operate as before. BRIC-Link II is not currently compatible with the Xstream’s HTTP and SIP streaming functions. There are several limitations imposed by the Xstream when using the RTP Push. Under most circumstances, BRIC-Link II and ACCESS require an IP path in both directions for successful connections, even when audio is being sent only one-way. For networks that provide data only in one direction, it is possible to use Standard RTP mode to establish and maintain these links. To set up a connection to be “always active” (i.e. reconnect in the case of power outage or network failure), choose that connection on the System Settings tab as the Always Connect To location. To trigger the connection when an external contact is closed, choose the connection under one of the Contact Closure settings on the System Settings tab. If a service is not mentioned here, it is disabled by default. The Comrex BRIC-Link II is a device designed to move real-time, wideband audio over IP networks. The main network interface is 1000baseT Ethernet. Only SSH clients with an authorized DSA key can access SSH services on the device. Other forms of authentication are disabled. This key is kept confidentially by Comrex for factory diagnostics only. SSH services may be disabled completely via the user interface. The Comrex units were so reliable that after a lightning strike, which blew out the main output, it continued to work for several more years. When we started having interference problems with our radio STLs, KSUT began using Comrex BRIC-Links to bypass the interference issues. I always read the manual, but it’s helpful to be able to call and speak with a person who has a wealth of knowledge about our equipment. The Comrex support team has been especially helpful in configuring our BRIC-Link infrastructure. We have some challenging connections — for example, there’s a 10,000-foot mountain between our studio and one of our transmitter sites. The internet pathway is punctuated with microwave hops. Despite the geographical challenges, our BRIC-Links reliably run at 128 kbps and I rarely have to do anything to the connection or the equipment. The BRIC-Links have a GUI interface that allows troubleshooting from any computer. The BRIC-Links have been reliable and so far, we have had no major failures. Because of the dependability and excellent support from Comrex, I would recommend a BRIC-Link system to anyone. Louis on Air England and Wales company registration number 2008885. I have read pretty good 'stories' though about the APT Silver series, and I seriously doubt (forgive me.) if the 50 extra cost compared to the BRICLink is worth it. The extra cost will need to come out of the budget of the rest of the project. So I'm looking for a good balance between cost and reliability (but hey, aren't we all.). I hope you will be at IBC?Price is definately an issue but so is the earlier mentioned reliability. If we end up with the Comrex, something else in the total setup needs to go. The APT surestream technology appeals to me, but I have no experience whatsoever with the APT Silver line so I would like to hear from someone that has. I know the Comrex BRICLink is pretty much rock-solid, but is it really 50 better (it is 50 more expensive) than the APT. Is FLAC really an option over the WWW. Last: would the Worldcast Horizon setup be a possible solution? It drops your bits down to around a 700k stream. We had some hiccups with the regular FLAC. Not too many, but enough to make a change. There is a station here in town that uses our STL tower to get to the TX. They have Comcast business class Internet at their place. It can barely do AAC without breaking up.
It's difficult to use the linear options if you don't really have a lot of control over the path. We pulled it off, and Stephen mentioned it earlier. My network infrastructure is unique and uncommon for most places. I still had 'bumps' until I did the FLAC 15K preset. The real question in my mind vis-a-vis this concept for USA was that DSL here is not all that cheap so that the price of 2 or 3 DSLS with sufficient bandwidth is not really cheaper than just getting a point to point T1 which is regulated and has to perform. And the really low budget operations will not tolerate the cost of more than one DSL line. If you are using an APT codec on a single network Sure Stream should be turned off and you should compare APT-X with the other algorithms in the box (despite being only 4:.My experience a couple of years ago was that the low delay (therefore allowing more buffering for a given total delay) and error concealment properties make APT-X surprisingly competitive wth the far more sophisticated approaches offered by Comrex and Telos. To be fair, Comrex was the first with such an approach. Rolf Taylor (Formerly with both Telos and then APT) Not bad for the last leg being a 15 mile wireless shot. As far as I'm concerned Barix is off the shortlist. In one case, an owner elected to feed two co-located AMs from a single Barix link. The real trick is in how you set them up. If you're lucky enough to have your units within the same phone company, you can use DSL on both ends and stay within the company's network. Even then, I have channels that use cable with good results. To be fair, I also have a pair of Bric-Links on an FM. They're on a fiber link, so bandwidth isn't an issue for the PCM setting I use. The Bric-Links have performed well in that application. The performance of the Barix boxes is excellent.
My experience a couple of years ago was that the low delay (therefore allowing more buffering for a given total delay) and error concealment properties make APT-X surprisingly competitive wth the far more sophisticated approaches offered by Comrex and Telos. I hear you that the BRIC-Link is more expensive than the APT Silver. You are getting balanced pro level analog, AES3, duplex operation, FLAC, and the AAC suite over the low end Silver, so I don't think it's a bad value. Tom Hartnett Technical Director ComrexYou really want some of the codecs specifically built for connections over the uncertainties of open Internet. Unlike APT which would use two streams sent over different Internet connections and then choosing the packets on the receiving end, Telos and Fraunhofer developed a technology to adapt to the varying network conditions. For example, if the bandwidth drops, the units will scale down the bitrate and increase the buffering to compensate for the degradation in order to always keep audio going without break-ups (within the user set parameters). They also employ error correction and error concealment. While Comrex units are also good, why I wouldn't use them for this application (STL) is because they are not 24-bit (at least I couldn't confirm in the specs and the manual) and both APT and Telos can do 24-bit. With 16-bit codecs you might have a need to have something (AGC) in front to protect it from being over driven and clipping, or suffer a higher noise floor if you leave enough headroom. With 24-bit codecs, there's enough dynamic range to go straight from the console to the codecs and not worry about the headroom, clipping or noise floor. And then have your processor at the transmitter site which is the best possible place for it. We strive to build reliable, user-friendly tools that engineers can trust to work, even during complicated broadcasts. Our goal is to make it easy for broadcasters to create the programming they care about.
Our ACCESS and BRIC-Link IP audio codecs make use of sophisticated audio transmission technology to ensure reliable broadcasts over challenging IP networks. We then used our years of experience in IP to develop our CrossLock tools to handle the unique demands of transmitting video, with the development of our LiveShot IP video technology. Throughout it all, we have continued to refine our telephone hybrid technology with products like VH2 and STAC VIP, and break new ground with products like Opal. However, high resolutions have until now required high bandwidth connections and high-end devices, and this has heavily restricted adoption over fixed and mobile networks. Uniquely, the PERSEUS codec format was designed from the ground up for hierarchical (“multiscale”) and massively parallel processing. Professional equipment enabled with PERSEUS provide broadcasters, content producers and service operators with the industry’s best and most reliable performance at the lowest equipment cost. PERSEUS leverages standard encapsulation and transmission standards, and is thus transparent to encryption (DRM, CA), metadata management, packagers, Content Delivery Networks, etc. The IPE-4000A receives IP packets from an Ethernet connection and encapsulates selected packets into an MPEG-2 transport stream per DVB or ATSC specifications. Once the IPE has encapsulated the data, it forwards the data packets based on the user configurations. The output transport stream can then be forwarded to a multiplexer or directly to a modulator for the high performance and cost saving transmission of IP data over cable, satellite or terrestrial networks. The Pro Cinema Stereoscopic Encode Processor combines the left eye and right eye HD-SDI inputs from the stereoscopic camera into a single HD-SDI signal using visually lossless SENSIO Hi-Fi 3D stereoscopic compression. The Pro Cinema Stereoscopic Encode Processor can support input up to 1080p 30 4:2:2 10-bit resolution.
Each audio decoder is independent of the other allowing maximum flexibility in data rates, codecs and sample rates: MPEG Layer II for existing DVB compatibility or MPEG Layer III or new High-Efficiency Advanced Audio Coding (HE?AAC) for the best audio performance at the lowest bit rate. Datacast XD client is used to download advertisement files or programs into the receiver via satellite. All of the common bit rates and sample rates are offered to enhance the IP delivery of audio. The P561 is an audio encoder for up to eight stereo channels (encoder channels). The unit is built in a compact 19” 1 U housing. All of the common bit rates and sample rates are offered to enhance the IP delivery of audio. HEVC also supports the new 4K UHD formats required for contribution. The additional efficiency of HEVC makes wireless transmission of 4K possible. Broadcasters need a simple and reliable HEVC codec to move their contribution systems forward, the Sapphire Codec from BWS is the ideal solution. Latency is critical in many broadcast applications and the Sapphire Codec is built to minimise latency without compromising quality. The 60mS end to end latency in HD and 90mS in UHD makes the Sapphire solution suitable for all live events, The Sapphire Codec system compresses a single 4K UHD input or up to 4 HD inputs in one unit. Each input can support 2 stereo pairs of embedded audio. CrossLock enables both powerful error correction and network bonding, and intelligently monitors and dynamically adjusts network connections in real-time. ACCESS NX’s updated hardware platform improves user experience with faster processors and a five-inch capacitive touch screen that doesn’t require a stylus. Other notable hardware features include a new second mic input, phantom power, and an internal battery. BRIC Remote Control allows you to unify the address books and profiles from all of your codecs into a single location for fast and simple selection of and connection to other BRIC devices.
