Akela 2.0 out of 5 stars Since I don't have the CD I've been trying to study it as if it were a normal school book. It's not terrible to learn from but it is from early 2000's so some facts are a little dated. I can't return it either. The book is literally brand new and they won't accept it back. So don't waste your money unless you have the CD or plan to buy it.If you don't have the audio CD (which I don't, because it's impossible to find with used books) then this book has little value. I'm studying it anyway because I want to learn the language, but online videos are now critical to hear any kind of pronunciation.

The publisher does have a nice web site (look on the lower left corner of the book cover:-) ) which is also critical to supplement to written material.The book is easy to follow and fairly complete, except IT RELIES ON AN AUDIO COMPONENT WHICH DID NOT COME WITH IT. I use free German podcasts in my study, so I can work around that big hole.This book series subscribes firmly to the notion that total immersion is a necessary fact of language acquistion. When that immersion comes in the form of cartoonish illustrations and eerily androgynous audio tapes, monolingualism becomes a tempting option. This series taught sixty students, once eager to learn the german language, that german is both laughable and abhorrent. If you are a teacher and you seek an instructional series for your classroom, please heed my warning. This series is insulting, obtuse, and poorly thought-out from its inception. She likes this book.If you are new and wanting to learn German by yourself this is a little hard to follow but it is possible!Otherwise, great buy!This is often discouraging to the student as he or she has no way of getting its context based on the vocabulary learned. For example, Goethe's vastly outdated German writing (and topics) are nice for advanced High Schoolers in Germany, they are hardly text book material for foreigners who are struggling to learn the basics of the language. (3) Each chapter starts with a conversation topic, but the vocabulary is introduced at the end of the chapter making it a backward and awkward system of introducing new words and phrases. Additionally and most strikingly, not all vocabulary is even introduced that would enable the student to actually translate the text. (4) Though relatively minor, there are your usual text book errors -- this time revealing that the author(s) at times are thinking more American than German.
