What's the motivation for the manual gearbox?

What's the motivation for the manual gearbox?Motivation is and was always to have as much control over the car as possible, this is just what I love. I love the shape of W201 and I am not so much in to newer cars, to much plastic.Give me a shout when you're ready to go ahead. Meanwhile, have a look at some pictures here.Like I said I am preparing my self and my bank account for this job haha But definitely I will contact you when I got all what I need. I am quite sure I move on with this in the middle of 2019. Do you know roughly what are the cost for this swap? Thanks I have one with the standard 5G box fitted. I am not so much fun of newer cars, I was working on cars since I remember but only as a hobby. I love the shape of W201 but it is lack of power. I am old school driver and clutch is a must haha Dont take me wrong as I am sure you still have great fun with your C55 and paddles but it is just not my kind of fun. I owned stronger cars before, but since I bought 190 I went mental haha I love this car for it shape, comfort and history that the reason I want to make it little bit more special. Thanks There are some inepxensive 5- and 6-speed manual BMW boxes on ebay for a few hundred pounds, if you can live with the relatively short first gear. For reference, a clutch and a flywheel are a few hundred pounds each. Then there's adjusting, balancing and coupling the prop shaft to the new gearbox. Pedal box, master cylinder, pipework. There are some inepxensive 5- and 6-speed manual BMW boxes on ebay for a few hundred pounds, if you can live with the relatively short first gear. Defo I am serious, thats why I am start preparing all I can now, but my main thing is to find garage. I want to speak with someone who knows what they are doing. I want a quote, I want to know exactly what parts I need, is it better to buy donor car or just a parts, diferencial need to be changed, brake system need to be changed, suspension need to be changed etc. Thank you for info Conversions like this are generally a step into uncharted territory and some aspects have to be worked out as they are encountered - they cannot be planned for (and therefore costed) in advance. Thank you for info What makes it even more difficult to price is that you want to put a completely different engine in. The only V8 190 conversion I've seen before had alterations to the firewall which pushed everything pretty much backwards. So you should complete the engine conversion before you even start thinking what gearbox you want to use. It is very likely that the car may need tunnel widening, which is hours upon hours of fabrication. Impossible to know anything 'exactly' until you have seen the car and took some essential measurements and for that you need your engine in. Essentially two Daimler engineers were sitting at home late at night and tinkering with various Mercedes models to make them faster and more powerful. These grease monkeys were eventually recognized by Mercedes and began to collaborate for racing and eventually production models. The first of these was a C36 model that sold in Europe. It was a fantastic car that packed 276hp, but AMG did not find real traction in the United States market until the introduction of the E55. When AMG began to tune this model, it was clear that a V8 would need to be used and the standard 5.0-liter from the E500 would be the starting point. After being completely bored out and reconfigured, the 5.4-liter legend was born. The bodywork of the new C-class was expanding to fit with the new Mercedes design philosophy which was departing from the square and boxy sedans of the late 1980’s. A sleek CLK-esque sedan emerged and was poised to make a stir in the entry level market. The wire mesh set into the lower grille section was also decidedly AMG and comes from the SL55 model. As your eye moves down the side of the car a set of sculpted rocker panels and 18-inch AMG wheels make themselves known. The double-spoke design is reminiscent of what would be later used on the E55 AMG model and the CLK55. The rear end receives similar treatment with a subtle decklid spoiler and revised bumper with exits for the quad exhaust tips that had become a Mercedes staple. The company was expanding rapidly and new AMG models had begun to spring up for nearly every line. The designers at AMG looked for a way to create performance oriented features for multiple types and sizes of vehicles, but were able to maintain a distinct style and feel. They did this so well that an enthusiast knew what an AMG model was going to look like long before any spy shots were seen. The quad exhaust is one of those items that was clearly going to make an appearance with the CLK55 AMG.
Even the steering wheel had white and black leather on it and the car just screamed performance. It was such a departure from the standard Mercedes lineup that forced you to take a step back and wonder why it was so different. The C55 AMG received a more low key set of changes, but they are still noticeable versus a stock model. A thicker three-spoke steering wheel with shift paddles is the biggest enhancement in terms of driving characteristics. A set of AMG faced gauges and seats help passengers remember that they are riding in a small rocket ship and the Harmon Kardon stereo system tries to drown out the V8 rumble. The Mercedes navigation system has received plenty of critical comments from the media, but this new system is now DVD based and there is no need to play around with multiple CD maps. Overall, the interior of the C55 was leaps and bounds above any other C-class model that had ever been produced. Engineers and executives alike felt that using the V8 would help to increase the car’s performance and keep it one step ahead of the competition. Simply stuffing the 5.4-liter V8 inside the nose of a C-class was no small feat and power was subsequently cut in this model versus others where the 5.4-liter was being used. It ended up making 362hp at 5,750rpm and 376 lb-ft.The extra 86hp helped the car hustle to 60mph in a factory estimated 4.9 seconds and through the ? mile in 13.2 seconds. These figures were great and on paper the C55 looked like it was stronger than any of the competition. Mercedes is notoriously stubborn with its use of the automatic transmission and it was not budging with this model. The 5-speed unit was perhaps the best one to be made up until this point, but still lacked the control provided by a manual. Changes to the shift mapping provided by AMG and the wheel mounted shift buttons helped out, but in the end an automatic will never be the choice of enthusiasts.
The M-division had been able to keep its baby BMW ahead of the competition for over a decade, but Mercedes and Audi had begun to close the gap. Audi introduced its newest S4 model with a V8 engine. The 4.2-liter was able to make 340hp at 7,000rpm which, in conjunction with the Quattro all-wheel drive system, was able to best the Mercedes on a track. The Audi also used a 6-speed manual transmission that was preferred by many in this segment. This new S4 was essentially the reasoning behind Mercedes putting the V8 in the C-class. In the end, performance over the 6-cylinder Kompressor model was negligible, but sometimes there is no replacement for the sound of a V8. Advertisement W201 190E 3.2 AMG The 190E comes from Mercedes' era of fastidious engineering without compromises, and was clearly aimed to compete with a certain Bavarian manufacturer. Of course, we all know about the Cosworth versions. But this is the real cool one. With a huge 3.2 liter straight six, this is a proper AMG car, handbuilt, and looks extra mean. It features a manual transmission, and a 0-60 time of 7 seconds. Downsides? Well, with a straight six, a manual, and those proportions, it feels almost too squarely aimed at BMW. But who are we kidding, those looks are pure AMG brutishness. Advertisement W124 E36 AMG Of course, we all know about the 500e. Except that one isn't technically an AMG. The e36 AMG is the underdog of the W124 range, perhaps one of the greatest Mercedes ever made. And it's arguably more interesting than the 500e. Indeed, it has a 3.6 liter straight six, 272hp, is available in coupe, convertible, sedan, and just to please Jalopnik readers, an estate version. The best part? All are available with a manual transmission. Advertisement W140 S600 AMG 7.1 This particular AMG should perhaps be considered the single most German car ever made. First, just look at it.
{-Variable.fc_1_url-
Second, it's so big that when it came out, they were surprised to see it couldn't be distributed around Europe by train, because it wouldn't fit on them. Third, it has a 7.1 liter V12 good for 496 horsepower. The 7.1 liter version is extremely rare, with only one on sale in Europe right now. Advertisement W202 C55 AMG Of course, you probably have heard of the C36 AMG. Or even C43 AMG. But you probably haven't heard of the C55 AMG. With only a few hundred built, to get one, you had to purchase a C43 AMG, give it back to Mercedes along with a few tens of thousands of dollars extra, after which they would cram the 350hp V8 that you could also get in an E55 AMG and give it back to you. Imagine that, a car the size of a 3 series, with an engine competing with that of an e39 M5. Weight distribution. Those are questions you don't ask. Still, this is easily one of the most ridiculous and awesome AMGs ever to see the light of day. Advertisement R129 SL 73 AMG The R129 SL was a superbly engineered, fast, and safe convertible usually purchased with tame 6 cylinder engines. But over its lifetime, it received a plethora of 6, 8 and 12 cylinder engines. And this is the one you want. The extremely rare SL 73 AMG had 525 horsepower, took 5 seconds to get to 60, and its engine eventually became the Pagani Zonda powerhouse. Share This Story Get our newsletter Subscribe. AMG's transmissions are one element of this strategy. They permit customers to enjoy the convenience of automatic shifting, when required, as well as offering the dynamic attributes of a manual transmission through the Touchshift. Our research indicates that an overwhelming number of AMG customers would choose an automatic transmission even if manual transmissions were available.Your question is answered.
Not to say I wouldn't rather have a manual over an auto but if the performance was the same or better I wouldn't have qualms about buying one (assuming I even remotely had the means to do so) I'd rather drive a full manual because it is more fun being able to rev to whatever I want in whatever gear I want I've always driven a manual being in England and driving an auto was weird for me. To start viewing messages,I just wanted to inform some BMW owners that the smaller AMG cars (like the C55) can indeed handle very well around a track, despite having no mechanical LSD, no manual transmission, and narrower stock tires.
Because the M3 is not significantly slower thant the C55 in a straight line, it's the C55's handling prowess which enables it to keep up with the M3 on a track with curves. The trick is whether you are skillfull enough to use the throttle to induce power oversteer to get you through the turn in the fastest possible way. It is actually very easy to induce power oversteer in the C55 because of the massive torque from the engine. It just allows for a much more generous oversteer angle before activating. On the streets, this is a mute point because it is very hard (or very stupid) to take any of these cars to their handling limits on public roads. If you track your car regularly, the M3 will certainly deliver a more genuine sports car experience. I don't know the data, but my guess is that customers wanting AMG versions of those more expensive vehicles are quite happy with an automatic transmission. What impressed me the most about the gearbox is the automatic holding or even downshifting when lifting off the throttle (such as before a corner) so that the car is ready to pounce once your get back on the gas. The torque converter lockup in all forward gears virtually eliminates the typical power loss felt with typical automatic transmissions. The fastest manual mode in BMW's SMG is still faster. The M3 CS also has some parts taken from the amazing M3 CSL, including the revised steering rack, brakes, M-track DSC mode, CSL look alike rims and some interior touches.I will defintely have to go check out the C55 now if there is a better steering feel, that is the main thing that turned me off with MB's.Steering feel with the new AMGs is near-BMW great. Not as perfectly weighted as a BMW rack, but amazing for a benz. I was amazed with the feedback I got when driving a CLK55. The floatiness and numbness that were usally traits of Benz racks are not present.Steering feel with the new AMGs is near-BMW great. Not as perfectly weighted as a BMW rack, but amazing for a benz.
I was amazed with the feedback I got when driving a CLK55. The floatiness and numbness that were usally traits of Benz racks are not present. Same shitty choppy ride. And they're much cheaper to mod by far The C55 is a great car and I heard it out handles my fav C32's. Still needs an LSD and a Clutch to make me wan't to get one. If I have a second car and get a Benz its will not be a c class though. C55's are NOT cheap to mod, the C32 is.Nonetheless, there are a lot of BMW owners on this forum that have too much pride about their cars. I have a 2002 AMG E55, and have driven the new 05 E55, and I have no doubt that the C55 is a great handling car. It probably handles better than my E55. Both AMG and M make awesome cars. I think AMG cars don't get enough credit since all the magazines always rate the M cars first.Great review, i was always curious about the AMG C55 vs. M3.I really think the best thing M-B could do for its image with the car nuts is offer a manual. It really would silence a lot of critics.Nonetheless, there are a lot of BMW owners on this forum that have too much pride about their cars. MB makes great cars that perform nicely. I would still need to drive one to be completely convinced that it was as good or better then a BMW though. Wanna let me drive yours?I think it does turn off a number of people who would want to track the cars. C55 is in no doubt a very respectable car. However, they are more comfortable road cars that go very fast effortlessly (huge torque at low rpm's). In the case of the C55, it just also happens that it can still play competently with the M3 on the track if pushed.

If you track your car regularly, the M3 will certainly deliver a more genuine sports car experience. You can then correct, get on-throttle, and hold just about any desired slip angle all the way through the corner. The C55 WILL NOT do this; it still goes into a dead understeer. The only way the tail comes out with that car is if you put your foot in it and get the rears spinning. The M is much, much more neutral. It acts like a proper car should. Just because romping on the throttle in a high-hp RWD car and (lo and behold) the tail comes out does not mean it handles well.I have driven the late model MBZ's and as you mentioned the numb steering, non-defeatable stability control, tendency to understeer quickly, only automatics in their performance models bother me as someone who likes to have a car that talks back a lot to the driver. I'm curious why they don't offer some type of DSG system or SMG system at least. You can then correct, get on-throttle, and hold just about any desired slip angle all the way through the corner. The C55 WILL NOT do this; it still goes into a dead understeer. Just because romping on the throttle in a high-hp RWD car and (lo and behold) the tail comes out does not mean it handles well. It is indeed very fun and satisfying when you do it right.
In the C55, you are also right that you have to use the throttle to swing the rear end loose initially. In a C55, you have to work harder (more finesse with the throttle) to get that fine balance of oversteer. But in capable hands, it is should not be significantly slower than a M3 around a curve because the suspension tuning and chassis of the C55 is actually very capable. I view it as analogous to a M3 driver having to work harder to keep up with a C55 in a drag race. Accelerating fast in a C55 is effortless compared to the M3 because of the huge torque advantage in the lower rpm range and the very fast shifting of the AMG automatic transmission. But a skillful M3 driver that launches properly and shifts skillfully to keep his engine in the high rpm range will still keep up with the C55. Bottom line: I think it is a driver's race between the C55 and M3 both in a drag race, and on a track. The capabilities of both cars are very similar. However, the M3 definitely is more involving and rewarding to drive. If I didn't have kids and needed 4 doors, I might have bought the M3 instead. The capabilities of both cars are very similar. Same shitty choppy ride. Also, the E36 M3 has quite possibly one of the best raw feedback characteristics of any mid level sports car. Also, the E36 M3 has quite possibly one of the best raw feedback characteristics of any mid level sports car.Digital Point modules: Sphinx-based search.
