Ok, admittedly they are not totally accurate and seem to skip a few details here and there, but they are worth ?15 just for all the torque settings. I haven't bought a manual for a few years so I was a bit surprised when I bought this T5 one to see that the pictures are still in black and white. It's a shame they are only paperback too, the old hardback ones took a lot of abuse so time will tell how durable the modern ones are.

Content is top-notch and deserves a nivcer presentation.The format is exactly the same. I would of thought there would have been updates such as colour photos. Revised versions of the motor fitted in the pre-facelift T6 models, these now meet the latest Euro 6D-Temp emissions regulations, and offer the following choice of power outputs: Given the choice, we'd spend the extra on the 110hp model to ensure enough performance in these situations. The 110hp model is revving at around 2,500rpm at 70mph, and this does make it noisier, though not unbearably so. The DSG automatic transmission suits its performance and its likely use as a lifestyle vehicle - this transmission is streets ahead of the conventional automatic available in the Transit Custom, for example. Even if it can be a bit abrupt at lower speeds. It also enables some clever safety features and saves a bit of fuel, helping to reduce running costs. These vans just don't seem to have much sound insulation, with engine, road and wind noise all being quite apparent inside. It does seem a little tight that VW doesn't fit a six-speed transmission as standard, but presumably this helps to keep purchase costs down while making the less powerful models feel punchier at motorway speeds. Step up to the 102hp model and there is a world of difference. Even early 140hp models make light work of cruising on the motorway thanks to the addition of that sixth gear, and the 180hp version is obviously even better (although it does appear to have some long-term reliability concerns). The 204hp models are more powerful than any contemporary medium van rival. Even the 150hp model feels very fast, while the 204hp is practically a load-carrying GTI. But the T6 has always been a smooth performer on the road, if not quite as sharp as the Transit Custom or Renault Trafic family, and not quite matching the assured comfort and luxury of the fanciest Mercedes Vito models. But you soon learn that the Transporter isn't overly keen on turning into corners quickly, feeling almost as if it is going to trip over its outside front wheel.

Going back after you've selected the wrong menu item can be confusing, for example. We found using the conventional sat-nav screen in the central location to be much less distracting, for example, as you don't have to look so far from the road. The standard dials are also very clear and easy to read. It's intended to be particularly useful to small fleet customers (10-15 vehicles) that wouldn't otherwise bother with any fleet management software. So while there are a couple of dash-top bins, they don't have lids, which means people can see what you've put in them and that stuff will likely reflect in the windscreen while you're driving. But this, together with the need to find room for the latest exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology under the bonnet, has brought the dashboard closer to the passengers' knees. As you can see, it is far less fancy than the T6.1, but to our eyes it does have an appealing practicality that suits a van. This is a boon over some rivals - including the Transit Custom - where secondary controls have been scattered all over the cab. VW's seat designers do apparently know what they're doing. Which should also help keep lease and other finance rates down, reducing monthly payments. As of May 2020 it even offers interest-free finance on servicing and repairs to enable you to spread payments and make things more affordable. This should get you back on the road quicker, VW claims. Make of that what you will. On top of this, however, more lifestyle-orientated versions have been added: the Sportline (from late 2016) and the Edition (from 2017). With maximum payloads of between 729kg and 1333kg, again the Transporter is good without ruffling the feathers of the best in class. The same is true for maximum payload volumes ranging from 5.8m3 to 9.3m3. There’s the option of adding a second sliding side door, while at the back there are twin side-hinged doors that open to 90-degrees. Rear doors that open out to 250-degrees to leave the load entrance completely unhindered are an option. The load sill is also low, which helped when lugging weighty items in and out of the back. There’s the factory option of lining the inside of the panel with hardboard and Volkswagen also offers a variety of load lashing rails and rubber mats to make the Transporter’s cargo area more practical. As standard, there are four load securing rings in the short wheelbase model. While not the most exciting or innovative of cab designs, the Transporter’s is neat and no-nonsense. It features a steering wheel that can be altered for angle and reach, as well as a driver’s seat with height adjustment to help fine tune the driving position to suit every driver. Rear parking sensors are an option, as is Lane-change Assist to help prevent the van wandering over white lines unintentionally. Passengers are treated to a front airbag as standard and so is the driver, while side curtain airbags are an option for the Transporter. It also comes with ESP and ABS anti-lock brakes on every model.

All of the other controls are also simple to identify at night or at a glance and Volkswagen supplies a stereo with single CD player as standard. Satellite navigation, electric windows and air conditioning can all be added to the Transporter at extra cost. All of these engines come with front-wheel drive transmissions as standard, but the 140PS and 180PS engines can also be had with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive for added traction in slippery conditions. However, the 102PS engine is much more rounded in its abilities and you’ll rarely have to change out of top gear when up to speed on the motorway. However, don’t expect vivid acceleration from either of these engines. It provides fuel economy that is only marginally behind its 102PS sister engine’s yet it feels far brawnier and lively when you press the throttle pedal further along its travel. With 340Nm of torque on hand, the 140PS turbodiesel has considerably more oomph than the 102PS’s 250Nm and it’s not so far behind the 180PS motor’s 400Nm. For the ultimate in smooth gearchanges, however, you need to try the seven-speed DSG gearbox. It swaps from one gear to the next with almost imperceptible changes and makes the Transporter one of the best vans in its class to drive. Even when fully loaded, the Volkswagen is more than able to deal with speed bumps and ruts with calm efficiency. The Volkswagen makes up for this to a large extent with light, accurate steering and more nimble feel than much of the competition.
