The best rice cookers can win over any home cook—even purists who prefer the stovetop method or people who hate single-use appliances. For such a simple process, making rice can be finicky, and there’s nothing worse than an overdone or underdone pot. But with the help of a rice cooker, you can make perfectly tender grains again and again at the push of a button, freeing up your time and attention to spend on other aspects of the meal. If there’s a one-task kitchen gadget that’s worth finding the cabinet space for, this is it. Having a rice cooker means you can make a bowl of sushi rice on even the busiest nights, or prep for an entire week of grain bowls and fried rice by cooking a big batch on Sundays. They’re easy to use, easy to clean, and take all of the guesswork out of grain cookery—especially when you have the best on the market. We tested 12 top-rated models to determine the winner; many, many cups of steamed rice later, we decided the Zojirushi Induction Heating System Rice Cooker and Warmer made the best rice, batch after batch. Read more about our picks for the best rice cookers below, and scroll down to find out how we tested each machine. It’s intuitive to use and easy to clean. The nonstick inner pot was the heaviest of any we tested, and the markings inside that dictated how much water to add for various types of rice were the easiest to see (the markers are white, which contrasts well with the dark pot). But the thing that really set this machine apart was its use of induction heating, which provides a precise, even heat source that warms the whole pot rather than just the bottom.

(Most rice cookers simply have a heating element that warms the bottom of the pot, which can result in uneven cooking and browned bits at the bottom of the batch). Rice that came out of the Zojirushi was never unevenly cooked; it was fluffy, perfectly tender, and just overall better than the rice we made in every other machine. It also never stuck to the bottom of the pot. As with all rice cookers, one of the great pleasures of using the Zojirushi Induction Rice Cooker was the ability to set it and forget it, keeping rice warm for hours with the automatic Keep Warm setting. Because this model is a Micom rice cooker (a.k.a. micro-computerized), it has the intelligence to tweak temperatures and cooking times according to feedback from the machine’s sensors. This comes in handy if your water or grain measurements are imprecise. If you accidentally added too much water, for example, the machine adjusts cooking times and temperatures so that you still won’t end up with mushy rice despite the human error. It’s also the only one of our top picks that counts down your cooking time from start to finish, so you always know how far you are from a bowl of perfect rice. Sure, this rice cooker is pricier than most on the market due to its induction heating capability, large capacity, and programmable features, but it completely removes the many variables and shortcomings of making rice on the stove. For foolproof, great-tasting rice with almost no effort, this Zojirushi model can’t be beat. It produced rice that was close in quality to the Zojirushi Induction Rice Cooker—at a much faster pace than the top-spot-earning machine. It beat the Zojirushi by 15 minutes, to be exact. In the negative column, the Cuckoo cooker only displays the remaining cook time when the rice is about 10 minutes from finishing, so you can’t time your meal as precisely as you can with the Zojirushi. Also, though the digital face is relatively easy to read, it doesn’t light up.

But the Cuckoo’s biggest quirk—which we noted during testing and is well-documented in other online reviews and comments about the product—is its lid design. When you press the button to open the machine, the lid lifts so quickly that the motion can jerk the entire machine backward, knocking it over or even off the counter top. We recommend avoiding the button altogether and gently easing the rice cooker open with your hands. If you don’t mind that minor inconvenience as well as the shorter timer display, it’s a great affordable alternative. The best mini rice cooker: Zojirushi 3-Cup Rice Cooker For our testing purposes, we classified anything that could cook four cups of uncooked rice or less as a mini rice cooker: a manageable amount for a household of two to four. The overall winning induction Zojirushi and the budget pick Cuckoo can both cook a lot of rice in one go, which is great for big groups or families who’d like to prep rice in advance for a week of meals. But for the average user, a small rice cooker (with a one- to four-cup capacity) is more than large enough. The Zojirushi 3-cup cooker is a Team Epi favorite; it’s simple, straightforward, a breeze to clean, and doesn’t make a starchy mess when it operates like some other models in the mini category. It has a glass lid, which is great for visually monitoring progress as your rice cooks. Because there’s just the one button to press, anyone can use it, and it’s small enough to tuck into a drawer or cabinet with ease. Some make risotto, some oatmeal, and still others come with steamer baskets for lightly cooking vegetables and other ingredients above the rice at the same time. But we came to test each rice cooker’s primary function (without which a stellar steamer basket wouldn’t win us over): making rice.
{-Variable.fc_1_url-

For the full-size rice cookers, we cooked two uncooked cups of Nishiki Japanese medium-grain white rice in each model; in those that performed well, we then cooked two cups of short-grain brown rice followed by two cups of long-grain basmati rice. For the mini rice cookers, we cooked one uncooked cup of the medium-grain white rice in each model. A note on cleaning rice Anyone who has ever cooked rice will tell you that rinsing the grains is a key to success. Washing rice removes excess starch, which keeps the rice from sticking together when it’s cooked; for some varieties, you want the starch, but for others, rinsing it off is the fast-track to fluffy, soft grains. We followed each individual rice cooker’s instruction manual for rinsing, which ranged from obsessive (the Zojirushi induction model calls for around eight rinses) to casual. Factors we evaluated Is the rice cooker easy to use. The best rice cookers should make cooking rice nearly effortless, requiring very little human intervention. All 12 models we tested delivered on that intuitive simplicity with manuals that clearly outlined how to get started, including details on how to measure your rice, how to wash it, how much water to add to the cooking pot, which menu setting to use, and what buttons to push to start cooking. In machines that kept the rice warm, the Keep Warm setting clicked on soon after the rice was done cooking. How long does it take to cook rice. Range in cooking times varied greatly among the machines. Though quick-cooking rice is always a temptation, we found that the best rice generally took the longest to make. The full-size Zojirushi models each took close to an hour for medium- and long-grain white rice and nearly an hour and a half for brown rice. By contrast, the Instant Pot and Breville Risotto Plus, which both performed just so-so, took around 10 minutes. What is the end result like. We wanted to find a great rice cooker that excelled at all three types of rice we tested.

We looked for evenly-cooked, flavorful, perfectly-textured, fluffy rice. We also aimed for flavorful grains that were cooked through without being gummy and retained bite without being too firm. Does the rice cooker have any useful additional features. Every rice cooker comes with a couple of key accessories: a measuring cup (don’t get confused, “one cup” in rice cooker parlance is actually a ?-cup measure) and a rice paddle. All but the Cuckoo and the Breville had a paddle holder on the rice cooker itself—a welcome feature. A few of the rice cookers that we tested included steamer baskets, which in the case of the Hamilton Beach model, doubled as a sieve for cleaning rice. Technical features, such as the warmer or timer, make an already convenient machine even more user-friendly by allowing home cooks to plan ahead. How easy is it to clean. All of the rice cookers that we tested, with the exception of the Instant Pot, have inner pots with a nonstick coating; this coating is essential when it comes to easy cleaning. You should be able to use your spatula or paddle to scoop out rice without leaving residue or stubborn rice bits stuck on the bottom. The lids of the Zojirushi, Instant Pot, and Breville machines are also washable, an added bonus, especially for those who think simply wiping down the lid doesn’t cut it. How much room does it take up. Each machine’s countertop footprint varied—most of the models we tested measured in at under a foot diameter. All told, they don’t take up much more room than a food processor. Taking up less counter space is always better from a storage and use perspective, but the quality of the rice was more important to us in the long run. Is the rice cooker a good value. Ultimately, the best rice cooker won regardless of price, though models like the Cuckoo and Zojirushi 3-Cup got points for performing well for their price point.

Other rice cookers we tested None of the machines we tested were an all-out fail; with any of these, you will be able, at the very least, to cook some rice. It comes with a similarly sturdy cooking pot and has an intuitive, easy-to-use digital interface with a Keep Warm function and preprogramming options. We also like its retractable cord and the handles on the pot that allow you to safely lift it from the rice cooker while still warm. But like the Cuckoo, it only gives you the remaining cooking time when the rice is about 10 minutes from finishing—and it couldn’t match the texture of the rice made in the Zojirushi Induction Rice Cooker. Unfortunately, it produced the most disappointing results of the rice cookers we tested and did not advance beyond the medium-grain rice round. It was very fast, but the result was gummy, difficult to fluff even with the rice paddle, and stuck to the stainless-steel pot (the only pot insert that the rice clung to since it was the only model that didn’t have a nonstick pot). As a pressure cooker, it’s great, but we would not count cooking rice successfully among the Instant Pots’ many features. It lacked the features you’d want in a rice cooker of that price point (and from a trusted name like Breville) like a timer and specific programmable rice settings for each type of grain, and the medium-grain white rice it made was unevenly cooked. The bottom of the rice took on some color, but the grains were too firm. Also, it released fumes that smelled like burning rubber. It produced impressive results with medium-grain white rice and long-grain basmati and possessed a number of advanced features for a low-cost machine, such as warming and preprogramming options. However, it fell short with the brown rice, which was undercooked after 60 minutes. If you’re not much of a brown rice eater, this could be a good option for you.

But the lid was too light to stay on properly; while the rice cooked, the resulting steam kept popping the lid askew in the bowl, which allowed too much heat to escape and had to be monitored throughout the process. Also, it took the longest of any of the mini models we tested to cook one uncooked cup of rice—a whopping 34 minutes. It was easy to clean, made very fluffy rice, and emitted a loud beep to let us know when it was done cooking (then immediately moved to the Keep Warm setting). It would be a great budget-friendly pick for those looking for a smaller rice cooker. The rice it made—in record time for a mini, just 19 minutes—was a little too firm, and during the cooking process, it leaked slightly starchy water all over the sides and down the counter. It cooked totally passable rice in 25 minutes, and takes up virtually the same counter space as the Zojirushi 3-Cup. But similar to the Cuisinart, it suffered from some leakage, which ultimately cost it a top spot. The takeaway Rice cookers are especially attractive to those who seek convenience in the kitchen and enjoy a set-it-and-forget-it approach to dinner. If you plan to use yours frequently, eating rice multiple times a week and cooking a variety of types, buy the Zojirushi Induction Rice Cooker. For a less expensive machine that’s still top quality, buy the Cuckoo Rice Cooker. To make slightly less rice per batch, opt for the Zojirushi 3-Cup Rice Cooker. What else to make in your rice cooker To get the most versatility out of your rice cooker, do explore its other uses—like boiling alternative grains like quinoa, bulgur, and farro, steaming eggs and proteins, and making soup. Frittatas: You can certainly cook tender, fluffy egg s and cheese in the pot of your rice cooker. Add leftover cooked vegetables, cheese, or protein to mix it up. Steamed fish: For rice cookers that come with steamer baskets or have steamer trays attached, place a piece of fish over the rice to gently cook simultaneously.

Marinating the fish will intensify the flavor and punch up the rice, as well. Porridge: In a rice cooker, perfect oatmeal, polenta, grits, and rice porridge cook—without stirring—in the time it takes you to take a shower and get ready for work. Some models even feature timers so that you can prep the ingredients the night before and have hot breakfast when you wake up. Soup: Cooking and reheating soup in a rice cooker makes dinner easy and fast. All it takes is sauteing the vegetables, adding the liquids, setting the machine, and letting it simmer. Apple sauce: Just cut up the fruit, add a bit of juice and sugar (if needed), and close the lid to make small-batch apple or other fruit sauces. An immersion blender will smooth out any lumps. I've set up this site so I can share my kitchen tips and hacks that have been passed on to me from my parents and grandparents and show you how a wonderful experience cooking is and not just a way to save money. Even in this hectic lifestyle, there is time to prepare and most important enjoy a home-cooked meal. I sent it to a shop in British Columbia (I think Beaver Elec) to be repaired. When it came back it worked but while the rice is cooking I can smell something burning from the inside of the machine. Unfortunately the repair shop in BC closed so I phoned Beaver Electronic in Ontario about the problem. Can I still use it, will it not cause fire. What must I do? It’s best to keep it safe and replace the cooker. I don’t know about your exact model, but some rice cookers have a plate at the back which you can remove and check the wires, and looks something like this. It makes me think that the Rice cooker is damaged from the sensor or voltage 120V does not work for this. Please note that the label of the rice cooker mention 100V 700W Should I try with a Step down device to confirm if that is the cause. In case the sensor is damaged or defective could you repair it? The difference between 100V and 120V is huge. Because the cooker has sensitive electronics, it’s even worse. Now I can’t say anything for certain because I don’t have the device near me, but I’m sure that something is (at least a sensor) fried. Is there some way in which the menu can be set to sushi and that it stays on that setting? Is this a common problem. Any fix for this? You shouldn’t leave the rice for so long in there. Even when I left it for over two days, the rice became YELLOW, not dry. Now, it happens after I bought a new pot for my 10-cup Zojirushi cooker. The other Zojirushi cooker is 5-cup and works fine.

(Tiger, Panasonic, Zojirushi are the ones I used) Note that the pot feel pretty hot in warm mode now. Larger amounts of water are also now collecting under the inner lid when opened. It won’t work. It’s supposed to be boiling hot. But only warm water no matter how long it plug in and on button. I had tried to open the bottom and looking for the thermo fuse. But there is no thermo fuse. So please help me to identify the culprit. Thank you in advance ! If possible, replace it. This is the fastest and simplest option. Never a problem. I just got a new one in the same model so I could give my old one to my college kid. Used it today for the first time. The lid popped open while cooking and after closing it back it appears to have steam leaking out the side of the lid instead of just out the steam vent. Should I return it? It seems the spring mechanism has weakened. I cannot find a replacement or instructions on how to open the outer lid to fix. Any ideas? I’d suggest trying other options. A more common issue is a loose screw. I don’t know about your particular model but if there’s a screw around the locking mechanism (either on the lid or the cooker), try tightening it first. This is pretty much game over as the only option to fix this is replacing it. My model is the NS-LAC05, and it is about 6 or 7 years old. I opened up the outer lid (which seemed to be a case of popping off the plastic, no unscrewing necessary) and indeed it was a weak spring as suspected (no sensor in this model). The mechanism was slightly confusing as there are two springs (I really should have taken a photo) but in the end I took them both off and strengthened them a little bit. It did the trick. Without this, it threw the whole thing off and I wasted a lot of time. On the control panel all the arrows are flashing and none of the buttons are responding, not even the RESET button. What do I need to do?
