Constance Chappell 5.0 out of 5 stars I took the revised GRE a few weeks ago, so I haven't received my official scores yet, but the range estimates I was given after completing the test were numbers I was happy with (750-800 verbal, 710-800 quantitative). I won't have the official scores until November. These numbers were fairly close to the practice score numbers I got taking the official ETS sample test, and a bit higher than the practice scores I got taking the practice tests. As I said above, I am not, nor have I ever been, very good at math, so although the quantitative score is only what I'd consider on the high end of average (77th percentile), for me, this score was far beyond my original expectations, so the studying I did paid off enormously. This Cliffs Notes book is the one I credit the most for my improvement on the quantitative questions. Here is how I studied: 1. I downloaded and took the free ETS test as a baseline. I also downloaded and studied their free math review materials. 2. Based on step one, I reviewed my options here on Amazon for supplemental study materials, and decided I wanted about two months to study. Any more than that, and I think you run the risk of overcompensating and second-guessing yourself too much. 3. I chose this book as well as They were both useful although I did spend more time with the Kaplan book and the Cliff's Notes book. 6. I took a practice exam every couple of weeks. This was more to get used to sitting a 4-hour exam than anything else, and that was helpful as an exercise in endurance. 7. I worked through the CD of included practice exercises with the Kaplan book. These were very helpful, although I must caution you to take answers and results with a grain of salt.

I felt that they often contained typos, and also that the verbal questions were often ill-conceived or explained strangely. Based on my verbal score estimate, I feel I am justified in making this statement. 8. The day before the test, I took one final practice test from the online tests available when you purchase this book. In total, I spent 3-4 hours a day studying for this, for two months, and I work a full-time job so I was more than ready to be done with this exam prep. I do feel it was worthwhile, however. I would estimate that my scores improved from the original time I took a practice test, to the estimated real scores, about 50 points on the verbal section, and at least 200 points on the quantitative section (but as I mentioned, my original quantitative result was pretty dismal, whereas my verbal was quite good in the first place, so I focused my study on quantitative). I do feel it was helpful to write several practice analytical writing essays, just to get a feel for how much I could realistically expect to write in 30 minutes; however, I don't know my scores there yet since they are hand scored so I don't have an estimate. If I had it to do over again, I would probably not bother with the Gruber book, but the other three purchases I made were helpful. This Cliff's Notes book was by far the most valuable and I carried it everywhere for weeks. I was also able to see some practical application for understanding geometry and math, in a way I was not able to see in high school, so this was just a good learning opportunity completely aside from studying specifically for the GRE. I learned a few tricks and shortcuts for data analysis that are proving useful for work. In short, I strongly recommend taking at least 4 or 5 hours to study by downloading and using the free ETS study materials, then deciding from there a) how much improvement you want to make, and in which particular areas, and b) how much time you are willing to devote to study.

I think I'd have easily scored well enough to get into my desired programs with no study at all, but I wanted to see if the test prep would truly help as advertised, and I also wanted to see if I still liked studying as much as I did 20 years ago before I bothered applying and paying tuition for grad school!Bought another copy for an immediate relative to study for a community college entrance exam. It has also been used by a relative to prepare for a teacher licensing exam. If you are aiming to get up to the top 97 level on any standardized test, it is sufficient by itself. All areas start with a very basic explanation, assuming you know NOTHING.There are also a few test-specific sections at the end for the GMAT, etc. Set a strict but REASONABLE study schedule for yourself - one chapter 3 x per week, for example - and work through the book. Review 1 x per week to make sure you remember what you applied. Take all the practice tests in the book. Then, a week or two before your test, do 3 full mock tests using your actual exam's past questions. To complete refresh and master the basics, I would suggest planning 30 hours of studying, practice exams, review, etc.For those who've recently completed a series of basic math classes (algebra 1, 2, etc.) it may take even less time. Don't forget the MOCK EXAMS at the end, though! Good luck. America NEEDS you to improve your STEM scores, so get cracking.:-) I assure you there are folks in India, China, Korea, etc.I am terrible at math, and I was having trouble answering any of the questions in the GRE study book I bought previously. I decided to give this book a shot, and I am so glad that I did. I took the old SAT quite a few years ago, and I scored in the 20 percentile in Math. I just received my official scores for the new GRE, and I scored in the 67 percentile. I'll take it! The book covers Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Word Problems. There are several diagnostic tests to asses your current skill level.

Each test is followed by the correct answers along with thorough explanations. You have the opportunity to answer the same types of problems over and over again for extra practice. The type of math in this book is basic, stuff you do in middle or high school, so most of the problems you will see in the book will be a review. It gives you tips, short-cuts, and provides plenty of examples and explanations for every type of problem presented. If you do not have great math skills like me, I HIGHLY recommend purchasing this book. I would have totally bombed the math section of the GRE if I didn't study with this book. The way I studied was by taking each diagnostic test in the book, seeing what I got wrong, and focusing mainly on my weak points. I would then go to my regular GRE study book and take a practice test. JMB 3.0 out of 5 stars One was published in 1989, and the other, in 1995. I own the 1989 edition, and found it to be helpful in preparing to take the GED test. The book (I assume both editions) is a good test of High School level (or slightly higher) knowledge. Unfortunately, I found that the GED test was changed in 2002, and some of the material in the 1989 edition is no longer useful.

Some examples are: the test subjects are now divided differently, and the rules for the essay have been changed. Over all, it is a helpful book for reviewing High School subjects, but I would recommend that you either skip this book, or at least don't finish your study with it. Make sure your final study material comes from a book published after 2002. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Please try your request again later. Our targeted subject review covers all the mathematics topics tested on the exam, including fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, polynomials, scientific notation, and more. While an undergraduate student, she served as a math tutor for members of the basketball team as well as for local public school students. In these early years of her own higher education, she realized that teaching mathematics had a special appeal. She has taught mathematics and physics from the junior high school to university levels in three states. Sandra has also continued her side career of tutoring and coaching students at all levels. Her one-on- one approach with young adults has yielded excellent results.

Sandra’s interest in education has extended beyond the classroom to the field of publishing, including writing and editing manuals on preparation for standardized tests at all levels. This book is the latest of her efforts to make mathematics both understandable and enjoyable for generations of students. This book helps with the mathematical reasoning skills, so read the book carefully and be sure you understand each section before you advance to the next. Numerous examples will give you the practice and confidence you need to do well. Remembering isn’t the same as memorizing. This book is designed to help you remember facts that you need without having to memorize. To help you get off to a running start, the book features a diagnostic pretest up front. Test-takers often overestimate how prepared they are for a test, so we suggest taking the diagnostic pretest before you delve into the review. Your performance will help you pinpoint what you know and what you don’t so you can spend time on the areas that need more attention. In the review, each mathematical topic is introduced, accompanied by several example questions with answers and explanations that are designed as further teaching aids to help you remember what has been presented. Exercises at the end of each chapter allow you to assess how well you understood the concepts introduced in the chapter. You probably have heard the saying, “We learn from our mistakes.” If you do make a mistake on any of the exercises, use that as a further learning experience and don’t be discouraged. If you ever locked the key in your car, that was a learning experience (a frustrating one, for sure) and, at least for a while after that, you always made sure you had the key in your hand when you locked the door. So if you choose the wrong answer to an exercise in the book, go to the explanation of the correct answer and learn from it so you won’t make that type of mistake again.

Time yourself (115 minutes) to get a sense of how quickly you must come up with answers. You can go back to any question at any time and you can change your answers if you want to, but you need to do it all within the 115-minute time frame. Admittedly, taking the test on paper is different from taking the test on a computer, but the goal here is to learn the math and strategy to answer the problems correctly. Today’s test places the emphasis on understanding and logical thinking rather than memorization, and it is based on real-world problem-solving skills. This next-generation test expects the test-taker to understand what a problem is asking for and proceed to answer it based on the information given. Use the four-part plan for reasoning skills to answer the questions: 1. Figure out what is known, what is necessary to solve the problem, what information is missing (usually your solution), and what is unnecessary (just because something is mentioned doesn’t mean it has anything to do with your solution). 2. Devise a strategy to solve the problem. This may involve making a sketch or a table (use the erasable note board you will be given at the testing center) or looking for a pattern, for example. 3. Solve the problem according to your strategy and choose or enter the correct answer. 4. Make sure the answer makes sense. This book shows you how to do this. The total test time is 115 minutes, but that includes 2 minutes for an introduction and wrap-up, so the actual testing time is only 113 minutes. The math test has a maximum of 49 raw score points. The value of each question varies with the difficulty of the question. Therefore, the number of questions on the test is not 49. In fact, it is 46, as seen in the practice tests at the end of this book. Questions are presented one at a time on the computer screen. One chart, table, or problem scenario may have several questions associated with it. The computer uses a split screen for this type of question.

On a split screen, the graphic or scenario stays on one half of the screen, and the questions appear one by one on the other half. Fortunately, there is a “Previous” button if any of these questions depend at all on a response to a prior question. Fifty-five percent of the questions involve algebra, but that doesn’t mean you are just given an equation and asked to solve it. Questions on any of the math subjects on the test (each of which is covered in a chapter of this book) may involve algebraic reasoning. The other 45 percent of the questions are computational. Your score is based strictly on the number of correct answers, with no penalty deducted for wrong answers or bad guesses. Therefore, you should answer every question. Once you have selected an answer to a question, take an extra second or two to make sure it makes sense. As an obvious example, the change you receive from a purchase shouldn’t be more than the money you gave the clerk, or the discounted cost of an item shouldn’t be more than the original price. The revision followed extensive analysis of candidate performance in the first year of the latest version of the test. Multiple-Choice Items The usual multiple-choice questions are a major part of the test, but not all of the questions are multiple-choice. These questions have four answers from which to choose, designated A, B, C, and D. You don’t necessarily have to come up with the correct answer from scratch—you only have to be able to identify the correct answer among the four choices. To choose an answer, click next to the letter for that choice. Drop-Down Items Drop-down items are a variation of multiple-choice questions. These are responses that are embedded directly in the text, and you click on one of three to five given choices to make the statement true. Fill-in-the-Blank Items Fill-in-the-blank questions involve problems for which you type your answer in a box.

It can be the value you got from doing a specific calculation, a one-word or one-phrase answer to a question, or an equation you would use to solve a problem. Fill-in-the-blank questions may have more than one blank to fill in. These questions are similar to multiple-choice questions except that you aren’t given any choices for your answer. You must come up with the answer on your own and type it in a box that is part of the question. Don’t be concerned about entering extra spaces as you type your answer because the extra spaces are automatically deleted when the test is scored. A symbol selector sheet is provided on-screen so that you can use symbols in your answer. Each question of this type will state which symbols may be used in your answer. See the section on the symbol selector tool later in this introduction. Hot-Spot Items Hot-spot items require some computer skill in moving the cursor exactly where you want it. These items accompany some sort of graphic on which you click a location to insert a point on a coordinate grid, number line, dot plot, or an edge on a geometric figure. If you change your mind about the placement of a point, clicking that point again will delete it and you will be able to insert a new point on the graph. Occasionally, you will be asked to plot, say, three points. If you try to insert a fourth one, you will be prompted that you have already inserted the requested number of points. You can then delete one of the other points to replace it with the new point. Drag-and-Drop Items Likewise, drag-and-drop items require computer dexterity in moving the cursor to drag small images on the screen, such as words or parts of numerical expressions (e.g., numbers, operators, or variables), and drop them into boxes where they make sense. Typically, you are given some choices to drag into boxes.

On-Screen and Other Resources The test provides many helpful resources (virtual calculator, calculator reference sheet, a formula sheet, and erasable note boards that are to be used as scratchpads—even a time clock so you can pace yourself ). It is essential that you be familiar with each of these so you can easily use them during the test. They will cut down on your test-taking time as well as help with the accuracy of your answers. The two choices at the lower right corner of each screen are important to bear in mind. One is “Next,” which you have to click to go to the next question. The other is “Previous,” which comes in handy when all of a sudden you remember how to do a former question, or when you need the results from the last question to answer the present question. This may happen in a split-screen situation, where a graphic or table, for example, is displayed on the left side of the screen, and two or more questions about the same visual are asked on the right side of the screen. Full content visible, double tap to read brief content. James Hoffman 5.0 out of 5 stars First, it has full instructions on the calculator you must use on the exam, something I couldn't find in other books. Second, it starts off at the beginning, with arithmetic, multiplication tables, etc. This is helpful if you need the review. In my friend's case, she was good with this material, and was able to gain confidence for the remaining chapters. Third, the remainder of the book is aligned to what's on the test, with no extraneous material that appears on other exams. This keeps the focus tightly on what needs to be reviewed, although the sample questions are a bit harder than actual GED math questions I've seen. So, if you can answer the examples, then you'll definitely be ready to pass this on the first attempt. Fourth, all questions have fully worked solutions included, something that's not true in all of these review books. Overall, an excellent book to prepare for GED Math.

I passed my GED 26 yrs ago. I then went on to earn an Associate's of Science degree 7 yrs later. I am now returning to college and need to refresh my math skills. I had hoped this book would be a useful tool for doing so. That was not the case. The information in the book is vauge and confusing. Many times I ended up having to use the internet for clarification on the material I was reviewing in the book. This book may be helpful in conjunction with other GED learning materials. However, he has understood everything so far; better then he has. Also he said, that he loved the fact that it gives you a practice a test at the beginning, so you know what you need to work on. Also that when you go to grade the practice test, it gives you the chapter that problem was in so you can work on it. And it explains how to get the answer.I'm sure that for some people this book would satisfy their needs. But having to try on our own to figure out the reason for the answers given for why a problem was solved in the manner that it was did not meet our needs. We were looking for simcity, something the children could practice until they had the concept down solid. But instead the majority of their time was spent hunting the reasons for answers, frustrated and disappointed. For people with bonafide math learning disabilities, this is the wrong book for them.If you want to learn to use the functions of your TI-30XS calculator, this is the book for you. It also has a very comprehensive list of things that will be on the test, and how to approach taking the GED test specifically. BUT. It occasionally lacks basic step by step instructions, or explains things in strange ways. Time and time again I found myself turning to the internet for a better explanations or clearer examples.
