An atomic war between the USA and the Sovjet Union has turned big parts of the Earth into radioactive wastelands. In these Wastelands only survival counts. The heroes of the game are a group of so-called Desert Rangers. These are the followers of the US Forces. They come from the southwest of the USA and can therefore cope better with the rough conditions in the Wastelands. After having created a group of Desert Rangers, you wander through a deserted solitude after the nuclear holocaust that the Third World War brought. The land is dried out and many mutants and other more or less humanoid creatures destabilise it.You move from town to town and gradually uncover a conspiracy that threatens the rest of the human civilisation. The journey leads you to the last human enclaves of the Wastelands, including the post-nuclear Las Vegas. You steer a party that initially consists of four soldiers through a post-apocalyptic surrounding. During this, you mainly move on a map from the birds view that is shown in tile graphics. In the course of the game the party can grow to up to seven members. The possibility to hire an enemy during a dialogue or a fight is unique. Revolutionary was the own behaviour of the soldiers; some commands are disobeyed and some tasks simply are beyond the character's know-how. By this, they got an own personality which created an until now totally new feeling in the game. The atmosphere of the game world puts over a gloomy and tough end time mood, Seen objectively, the graphics are only mediorce though, and the C64 version has no sound effects or music. If there is a fight, they view is switched to the one already known from Bard's Tale, you enter the actions for the upcoming fighting round and then look at the effect this has. Depending on the attributes, equipment and fighting skills the soldiers eke out a living more or less valiantly in the Wasteland. E.g. bad swimmers need a long time to cross a river and lose life energy during this.

Such a detailled skill system did not exist in any game before. The characters get experience points that serve for raising these skills. Concerning the plot, you can mainly go along as you like, you have an enormous number of possibilites for decisions and taking influence. There are different solutions for many situations in the game, that can lead to different results. A big part of the texts in the game were sourced out to a booklet due to reasons of memory capacity, and if needed the game refers to the corresponding paragraphs (locations in the book). This technique is also known from the game Dragon Wars. The extensive accessories was as a side effect also a deterrence for software pirates. As all the progess in the course of the game is saved on the disk, it is advised to create a copy of the original disk before starting to play. The movement screen with the map is for the movement of the group. This way you get from town to town. The party is shown as a figure of a manikin which is bigger than houses or mountains. In the towns you can enter dungeons. In the dungeons the map is a bit more realistic concerning the proportions. The game death of a character is final, there is no possibility of reanimation. However, the selections for a follower in this emerging gap in the party is enormous, you can try with quasi every NPC in the game to hire it.The skill screen shows the different skills that you can use. He gives you the mission to bring a Visa Card to Headcrusher in Quartz. He runs a bar in the southeast of the town: His favourite meal is Visa Card with peanut butter. This opens the door into the tents. If you want to have a chance against the hostile inhabitants, you necessarily need energy weapons (Laser Carbine, Ion Beamer, etc.). These super weapons are loaded with the Powerpacks - so do not throw them away. Then you tell the guard the number of steps ( 30 ): He will then allow you to enter the island.

Beware: You will face next to a malicious sniper also some laser weapons. Before you dare to go there, you should first tidy up thoroughly in Quartz and Needles. The gangsters entrench themselves in the Courthouse (northeast of the bar). With sufficient ammunition you can reach a lot of points in the inevitable conflict. Furthermore you will find Ace in the den of thieves. However, you need to save again on the original character disk. You need to be logged in to cast a vote.Wasteland was nominated as the Adventure of the Year by the American magazine (October 1988, Issue 52) and came in ninth in the list of the best-voted games of the magazine (November 1996, 15-year issue). The game was also taken into the Hall of Fame of the magazine (February 1993, issuee 103), same as into the list of unforgettable games, also here ninth (November 1996, 15-year issue). In my opinion this is the most coherent role play game that the bread box has to offer. It was also developed by Brian Fargo. The round based fighting system and the party mode were adopted, the simple 3D view however became and horizontal 2D view from the type of the first Ultima games. The game was released in 2014 and received good to very good critics. The project was lead again by Brian Fargo. Content is available under GFDL unless otherwise noted. In military panic, each sent 90 percent of their nuclear arsenals skyward. Although the destruction was tremendous, it was not complete.

Pockets of civilization remained, some even oblivious to the military exchange. They worked deep in the inhospitable desert valleys, surrounded by a number of survivalist communities. In addition to housing the nation’s criminals condemned to death, the prison contained light industrial manufacturing facilities. As the weeks passed, they invited the nearby survivalist communities to join them and to help them build a new society. Because of each communities’ suspicions towards one another, times were difficult at first. Ranger Center even provedYour party, the famed Desert Rangers, have been assigned to investigate a series of disturbances in the desert. After several strategy meetings, you’ve decided to search for clues in Highpool, the Agricultural Center, and the Rail Nomads’ Camp, all of which are located to the west of Ranger Center. It tells you how to get Wasteland up and running on your computer. It also contains a summary of the keystroke commands that you’ll be using. Once you load the game, you’ll find a party waiting by the Ranger Center. The four that you can create are called Player Characters (PCs). It you don’t use all of the four slots for your player characters, you can fill them with NPCs.This is a well-balanced party quite capable of seeing you through the entire game. You can use them or create your own characters. If you prefer to make your own characters, enter the Ranger Center to do this. You’ll have to delete one or more of the existing characters to create your own. But before you wipe out the existing party, take a look at their profiles first by pressing keys 1-4 to see each one.If this is your first time in the game, you’re already at the Ranger Center. If you’re not satisfied with these values, press the spacebar to “reroll” the values. When you’re satisfied, press.Press when you’re done. If you make a mistake while allocating skills, press -R to re-allocate them.Press N if you don’t want to keep him or her.

When you’re done viewing each screen, press the spacebar to go to the next screen, or to return to the previous screen.Certain skills can only be master by characters with an IQ of a certain level or above. Characters start with skill points equal to their IQ. During the course of the game, you’ll definitely want to raise your IQ.Luck also improves your odds in hand-to-hand combat.High agility enhances your acrobatic ability, so you can do things like dodge blows and jump on tables. The higher this value, the better you’ll perform in hand-to-hand combat.Although it may seem like a trivial trait.Charisma also affects how an NPC will react to you when you want to hire him or trade equipment. The more skill points you have, the more skills you can learn. As you acquire experience points, you can radio back to Ranger Center for a field promotion. Each time you’re promoted, your rank changes, your maximum constitution goes up by two points, and you get an additional two points to invest in any attribute. Rank does not affect how orders are given or taken since your characters are equal member of a team. A high rank, however could impress civilians enough so you can get into places where regular folks can't go.This value is the same as MAX on the onscreen statistics. If you have disbanded into several groups, only those in the same group as the character who is dividing his or her cash will share in the wealth. You can carry up to 30 items that you find or buy during your travels. Don’t immediately toss away items that seem useless. It can actually be an important fragment from a greater, more powerful item. Many items can be sold for cash at various stores. A precaution about picking up items: once you pick something up, you have to keep it or drop it. If you drop it, it will vanish into the depths of Wasteland, never to be seen again.

If you have no intention of picking up an item to keep (maybe because you’re already carrying the maximum amount and you don’t want to drop anything) you should leave it where it is. That way, you can come back for it later (and you better remember too, or you may miss out on some loot hidden beneath the item.)If you successfully unjam the weapon, you’ll lose the clip that was in it, leaving you with an unloaded weapon. Don’t forget to reload before you’re ambushed by a bunch of bikers. You’ll probably only use this command if you’re carrying a full load, and need to drop something in order to pick up another item. You can also use this command to drop something that’s broken (but keep in mind that broken items can be repaired or sold).Enter the number of the intended recipient and the trade will be made. NPCs have a mind of their own and may not always want to give their items away. You can only have one type of armor and one type of weapon equipped at any given time. The weapon you equip shows up in the onscreen statistics below WEAPON. When a piece of armor is properly equipped, your armor class reflects the change. The skills you posses weigh heavily in your success. Each character should have a slightly different repertoire, so the whole party benefits from a greater variety of skills. One character could specialize in gambling, lockpicking and forgery, while another could excel in demolition, brawling, and climbing. All the skills in the world don’t amount to anything if a character’s flat on his back, too weak to use them. The more characters who possess medical savvy, the safer the party is.You simply can’t learn the more technical skills if you’re not smart enough. The higher this is, the better you are. You can invest skill points in any skill as many times as you like, each time you invest in a skill, the skill level goes up. Skills also improve as you use them.

Since the cost of each successive skill level rises dramatically, improving a skill by using it is a cheap, effective method of gaining skill levels. To select a skill, enter its number. If you make an error, you can start your selecting over again by pressing -R.Initially, you can select a skill more than once; in fact, this is how you become more adept (or advance in levels) at this skill. Once you select a skill, the point cost doubles as each successive skill level becomes more costly. But keep in mind that picking skills at the Ranger Center is a one-shot deal; once you leave, you can't come back to pick more. After each skill name is a number in parentheses; this is the number of skill points needed to buy the first level for that skill. Each successive level doubles in cost. The higher your skill in brawling, the more attacks you get per round in hand-to-hand combat.Without this skill, you won’t be very accurate with the weapon or have much luck fixing it if it breaks.Handy for those close-up battles where the fists start flying. You’ll rue the day you didn’t pick up this skill as you look helplessly at the rifle you can’t shoot accurately. This will come in hand in those spots where you have to swim. You use up all your ammo and resort to throwing knives. No one should be without it.A skill that ranks up there in importance with walking and breathing.A handy skill to have should you encounter something far tougher than your Ranger instructors ever told you about.May make a big difference when you’re outnumbered three to one by bandits who’ve decided that they want the gold from your teeth. It’s particularly useful for getting information from people who are suspicious of you.Someday you my just need to whip up a security pass to get by some vigilant guards. This helps you deal with them so you can get when you want.Useful in helping you determine what a password might be.The new list won’t appear until you’ve selected all the skills.

Stackpole. Andre, Michael Stackpole, Mike Williams, Daniel Carver. The game was designed by Alan Pavlish, Brian Fargo, Michael A. Stackpole and Ken St. Andre, programmed by Pavlish, and produced by David Albert for Interplay Productions, and published by Electronic Arts.Players control a party of Desert Rangers, a paramilitary group based in the deserts of the Southwestern U.S. that survived the nuclear holocaust and are assigned to investigate a series of disturbances in the desert.

The party begins with four characters, and through the course of the game can hold as many as seven characters by recruiting certain citizens and creatures of the wasteland to the player's cause. Throughout the game, the player explores the remaining enclaves of human civilization, including a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas.Andre and Stackpole. Characters in Wasteland consequently have various statistics ( strength, intelligence and luck among others) that allow them to use different skills and weapons. Experience is gained through battle and through use of skills. The game would generally let players advance with a variety of tactics: to get through a locked gate, a player could use his Picklock skill, his Climb skill, or his Strength attribute; or he could force the gate with a crowbar - or a LAW rocket. The initial band of Desert Rangers encountered a number of NPCs as the game progressed who could be recruited into the party. Unlike those of other computer RPGs of the time, these NPCs might temporarily refuse to give up an item or perform an action if ordered to do so.Changes to the game world were stored and kept. Returning to areas later in the game, one would find them in the state one left them in, instead of being reset to their original state, as was common for games of the time. Since harddrives were still rare in homecomputers in 1988, this meant the original game discs had to be copied first, as the manual instructed one to do.These paragraphs described encounters and conversations, contained clues, and added to the overall texture of the game. Such paragraph books were a common feature of computer role-playing games of the period. Because programming space was at a premium, it saved on resources to have most of the game's story printed out in a separate manual rather than store it within the game's code itself.

The paragraph books also served as a rudimentary form of copy protection, as someone playing a copied version of the game would miss out on much of the story as well as clues necessary to progress. Additionally, the paragraphs included a dummy story line about a mission to Mars intended to mislead those who read the paragraphs when not instructed to, and a bogus set of passwords that would trip up cheaters with results that ranged from character sex changes to detonating a bomb.Wasteland was rereleased as part of Interplay's 10 Year Anthology: Classic Collection in 1995, and also included in the 1998 Ultimate RPG Archives through Interplay's DragonPlay label. These later bundled releases were missing the original setup program, which allowed the game's maps to be reset, while retaining your original team of rangers. The IBM version differed by having an additional skill called Combat shooting which could be bought only when a character was first created.Electronic Arts got cold feet at the last moment, and did not advertise it as a sequel to Wasteland; in fact, none of the creative cast from Wasteland worked on Fountain of Dreams. Interplay has described its game Fallout as the spiritual successor to Wasteland (as evidenced by the similar setting and that an NPC in Fallout 2 frequently recites combat messages from Wasteland). Coding of Meantime was nearly finished and a beta version was produced, but full production of the game was canceled when the 8-bit computer game market went into decline. It was re-released for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux in 2013 via Steam and GOG.com, and in 2014 via Desura. The game's general setting and concept became the basis for Interplay's 1997 role-playing video game Fallout, which would extend into the Fallout series. Game developer inXile Entertainment released a sequel, Wasteland 2, in 2014. Wasteland 3 is scheduled for release on August 28, 2020. Wasteland Remastered was released on February 25, 2020.

Finster has gone so far as to transform himself into a cyborg under the AI's control. With help from a pre-war android named Max, the player recovers the necessary technology and weapons in order to confront the AI at Base Cochise and destroy it by making the base's nuclear reactor melt down.Fargo further stated that game was created on Apple II as it was equally important to him like the Commodore 64.He added that due to his love for Mad Max 2 and post-apocalyptic fiction, he chose a post-apocalyptic setting for this new RPG.According to him, the process of creating the story of the game took over a year, though it was mostly due to them feeding various possible scenarios into how the game should react at a given time.
