The German Verkehrsclub Deutschland's (VCD) current rating system does not purport to be an LCA, and it has been modified based on evolving views about the importance of various automobile impacts. VCD scores from 0 to 10 (best). It considers impacts in nature both from CO 2 (vehicle manufacturer information) and pollutants (European Standards), in human health from pollutants, also considers noise. Australian Green Vehicle Guide (GVG) rating methodology considers only usage stage, giving zero to 10(best) points to GHG and air pollutants, disregarding noise.

The overall rating is based on the sum of the air pollution and greenhouse ratings (zero to five star (best)). For the vehicle in-use emissions usually a non-realistic, standard, driving cycle is used and again differs from country to country, despite aiming at representing urban and extra-urban driving. This paper presents the application of the revised methodologies to existent alternative vehicle technologies, pure electric vehicle (Nissan Leaf), gasoline hybrid (Toyota Prius), plug-in hybrid (Toyota Prius), conventional gasoline (VW Beetle TSI), conventional diesel (VW Golf 2.0 Bluemotion), where the urban and extra-urban driving is considered in the same fashion at a multi-country level. Preliminary results of the methodologies rank highly Honda FCX Clarity and Nissan Leaf. Conventional vehicles occupy bottom places in the rankings. The influence of the driving cycles is discussed. Each vehicle listed in the publication is given a Green Score. The number is based on a vehicle's air pollution health costs, global warming pollution, and other specifications. The guide's tables are arranged by vehicle class and cover cars, station wagons, vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles. The ratings in the Green Guide are based on emissions certificates and fuel economy data that automakers report to EPA. All entries must be received during the Contest Period. Halide perovskites present a serious drawback related to the presence of toxic materials, i.e., lead, with its associated health and environment concerns.

These concerns severely hamper their commercialization. So far, only a few viable alternatives to Pb have been found, which lag behind in terms of power conversion efficiency. Here, a forward?looking perspective is developed presenting different potential strategies to overcome the environmental and health issues related to the use and release of lead for operative HP solar cells. This encompasses a discussion of the New Zealand and worldwide market for EVs, the policy decisions and regulations that influence the manufacture and adoption of EVs, and the resulting effect on the environment. It is shown that it is unlikely New Zealand will be a key driver for electric vehicle development and uptake. The upfront price of EVs is too high to appeal to the majority of consumers, and the technology still has significant range and lifespan limitations that must be addressed. This is likely to limit any considerable EV uptake until at least 2020.

Furthermore, potential measures to subsidise or reduce EV costs would prove uneconomical given the size of the New Zealand market and the price premium commanded by imported vehicles. However, New Zealand could significantly benefit from an electrified fleet, with reductions in local air pollution, improved health and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. View Show abstract Energy Star Concepts for Highway Vehicles Article Greene The authors of this report, under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Weatherization and Intergovernmental Program, have investigated the possible application of Energy Star ratings to passenger cars and light trucks.

This study establishes a framework for formulating and evaluating Energy Star rating methods that is comprised of energy- and environmental-based metrics, potential vehicle classification systems, vehicle technology factors, and vehicle selection criteria. The study tests several concepts and Energy Star rating methods using model-year 2000 vehicle data--a spreadsheet model has been developed to facilitate these analyses. This study tests two primary types of rating systems: (1) an outcome-based system that rates vehicles based on fuel economy, GHG emissions, and oil use and (2) a technology-based system that rates vehicles based on the energy-saving technologies they use. Rating methods were evaluated based on their ability to select vehicles with high fuel economy, low GHG emissions, and low oil use while preserving a full range of service (size and acceleration) and body style choice. This study concludes that an Energy Star rating for passenger cars and light trucks is feasible and that several methods could be used to achieve reasonable tradeoffs between low energy use and emissions and diversity in size, performance, and body type. It also shows that methods that consider only fuel economy, GHG emissions, or oil use will not select a diverse mix of vehicles. Finally, analyses suggest that methods that encourage the use of technology only, may result in increases in acceleration power and weight rather than reductions in oil use and GHG emissions and improvements in fuel economy.
