DrDan 5.0 out of 5 stars Sold the VW. The book went with it. The book is superb. Highly recommended by someone who restored the VW bottom to top, front to back. We drove it on camping trips about 15,000 miles. Again, the book is great for preventive maintenance and trouble shooting on the road.Yes it is very technical, but for most of the jobs you would need this book for, if you are doing it yourself to begin with, you can understand it. The hardcover is great also. No need to worry about it getting destroyed easily like the softcover ones. I'd suggest buying it before it gets even more expensive. Although it is very expensive for a book, this thing is thick like a textbook, and compared to most mathematical and science related textbooks for schools, it is a bargain.It assumes you are experienced and already know which end of a screwdriver works. Its not going to teach you 'how' to work on your Vanagon, it's the 'bible' on the repair procedures on for your Vanagon. I suspect the negative reviews for this manual are mostly from 'newbies' and novices. So if you're looking for a manual to teach you how to work on your Vanagon, THIS IS NOT IT.

Naturally, its a translation of a German manual so you have to take that into account too, a translation is only as good as the translator, trust me, I work for a German company in their US plant and this is a very common problem. So be warned about what you're getting if you order this manual.I am happy that I went against their advice. The lack of a real index proved to be a major pain in the rear. The book is stictly a reference manual, and as a reference it is quite good. The pictures, drawings and diagrams are worth the price alone. There is little troubleshooting advice. I just completed some major overhaul work on my engine, and I could not have done it without the book. The bottom line is that the book is a reference, not a how-to manual. Maybe its because I knew almost nothing about EFI, but I thought that the Bosch book was the best auto book I've ever purchased. I give it 5 stars and consider it an essential companion to my Bently Vanagon book.The cost is about the same as an hour of labor at a Vanagon Shop.If you have never worked on a vehicle before, it might get overwhelming, but for the most part it is easy to read and follow. I do wish it gave you access to the pages online once you buy it, so if you needed to print off a wiring diagram you didn't have to scan the gigantic book.Don't let the initial investment scare you off. This book will pay for itself the first time you use it. They're not perfect, but they're better than Haynes or any other book out there.It arrived on time (early, in fact) and is in perfect condition. I'm going to keep it in the van in case I need repairs on the road.Starts where Haynes stops. It is the bible for V W t25 vans. Costly but massive boom with thin pages so per page reasonable. It often omits the most basic and preliminary steps of a given procedure, sometimes leaving one standing beneath the proverbial shadetree, scratching one’s proverbial head. The Haynes, by comparison, devotes several hundred words and a couple of photos to the same procedure. For someone doing his first hydraulic clutch job, these sequential steps, while perhaps redundant for an ace mechanic, can inspire a rookie to proceed with some confidence. I always consult the Bentley first, especially for any sort of tolerance, torque, dimension, etc., and although I’ve never found a blatant inaccuracy in the Haynes, I will always defer to the Bentley in a case of conflicting data. Safe working practices, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance and repair, emergencies, and step-by-step illustrated instructions that even a newbie can groove on. No Vanagon-specific info.
