But I’ll get there, any year now. ?? Anyway, in this article we meet the ever useful, but ever under-appreciated, Boss LS-2. With its several modes of operation and a little imagination, the Line Selector can serve a multitude of purposes. This article will attempt to describe a few of the ways this pedal can be used, but it will in no way be a complete collection. There are simply too many possible applications to cover ?? Each loop has a level control, located after the return jack.A Bypass: Loop A or bypass. B Bypass: Loop B or bypass. This mode may keep the returns muted, though, but I’m not 100 sure on that. I need to buy one to find out, I guess ?? Plug the guitar into the main input, and go out to the rest of the chain from the main output. The LS-2 will now serve as the main buffer, and bypass mode is your baseline level while A and B can be adjusted to create two alternate signal levels.Normally, I’d advise against using multiple guitar cables, since it very quickly becomes a tangled mess. But if you have a synthesizer, theremin or some other sound source you want to be able to run through the pedalboard, or for that matter a lap or pedal steel, it is very handy.Run everything you need for your clean tone (compressor, chorus etc) in loop A and everything you need for the dirty tone (overdrive, distortion etc) in loop B. Pressing the switch will alternate between the two chains, which really cuts down on tap dancing. For instance, you can run two distortion pedals in parallel. If you set one up with very little low end and the other with very little top end, or one with scooped mids and the other with lots of midrange, you can get some really cool sounds. You can then use the level controls to mix in the right amount of dry and effected signal. Set the effects pedal up with ”kill dry” or 100 wet (this is important. Simply turn off the LS-2 to bypass the whole shebang.

Simply connect the guitar to the input, and add whatever other signal source you want to return A or B. Leave the other loop empty, and you will now be able to set the level of the guitar and that other signal source using the level controls. Or insert yet another external signal source in the return jack of that loop, and those two signals (without the guitar) will be mixed together and send to the output jack. Step on the LS-2 to go to bypass mode, leaving just the guitar feeding through to the output jack. And of course, the synth can have its own set of effects, prior to joining the signal chain via the LS-2. Use the two returns for left and right outputs from the stereo effects, and you’ll see a summed mono signal at the output jack. Switching the LS-2 to bypass will mute the whole chain (since there’s nothing connected to the input jack). Just place it where you’d want to boost the signal, and leave both loops empty. And if you set it up in Output select mode, you can split the signal to three amps. It should be said that the LS-2 does not provide isolation, so you will not be immune from ground loop hum. Naturally, the LS-2 can do both functions, albeit with a little tweaking. Simply step on the pedal and select which amp you want to hear. But there’s another way to do this, which opens up a few more possibilities. The output jack connects to one amp, and send A to the other. Step on the pedal to alternate between the two. This time, bypass mode will still send the signal through the output jack to its amp, but active mode will send signal to both amps. Amp fx send goes to LS-2 input, and LS-2 output goes to amp fx return. Turning the LS-2 off will get you the volume the amp is actually set at (meaning you have access to a lower ”rhythm” volume and a higher ”lead” volume). If bypass is too loud, use A B mode instead and set the two levels to where you want. The LS-2 is not a power attenuator, and you will damage both the pedal and the amplifier.

I highly suggest buying one, if only to have in the toolbox. One day, it might come in handy. In fact, I probably should heed my own advice and order one for myself! ?? Others prefer a simpler setup, with a few stompboxes and a good amp. Some players even use a laptop, while others go for a sparse route, with an all-in-one processing unit and a D.I. output. For instance, we don’t want to be thinking about noise issues, how we’re going to find our next sound, if we’re in tune, or other distracting things while we’re playing. We want to focus on music! These can be used anywhere, from the jam room to the stage, or any other time you’re playing your instrument. Designed to help you be your best, these tools will streamline your vision and run in the background so that you don’t have to worry about unnecessary distractions. At a live show, it’s horrible for everyone involved. In a recording situation, it’s maddening.

Not to mention, very stressful if you can’t get rid of it. The solution? Kill it with a BOSS NS-2 Noise Suppressor. Some of the most common causes of noise are: As the industry standard since 1987(!), the NS-2 is essential for any guitar player. It’s a great pedal to have around for unforeseen issues, when using multiple effects, or if you’re playing with a lot of gain, to help the clarity of your picking and tone cut through. Think of it as covering all bases at once.Battery or Phantom powered, the DI-1 is the intermediary between your tone and a larger sound system. Indeed, most sound engineers who know their craft well will not even let you plug into a mixing board without a DI box! High impedance audio signals (such as that from an electric guitar) will start to lose treble when travelling down long cable lengths. DI boxes will convert this high impedance signal (sometimes referred to as High-Z) into a low impedance (Low-Z) signal, that then travels down hundreds of meters of cabling with little to no tonal loss. Guitar equipment typically provides unbalanced audio signal. A DI box will convert this to a balanced signal. So, if you’re tracking guitar for reamping later, it’s perfect because your clean guitar signal will remain intact. In addition, your effect processor patch sound will be exactly as it should be when plugged directly into a PA. Everyone is happy! Without power, electrical gear does not work. Simple. So, you’ll need a power adaptor. And not just any power adaptor. Many settle for something that will simply do the job, which often means cheaply made, noisy and frail units, built with inferior components. If you’re using multiple pedals, batteries can become quite pricey, quite quickly, especially if you use them regularly. A clean and powerful adaptor like the BOSS PSA-240 Power Adaptor will give you 500 milliamps of current, 10 feet of cable and is the recommended power supply for all BOSS Compacts, Twin Pedals and Multi-Effects.
http://genesisrealtycorp.com/images/boss-looper-pedal-manual.pdf

It will output 2000 milliamps of 9v DC voltage, which means that when it’s daisy chained, you can power a LOT of pedals. That’s more power than most of the popular but cumbersome “brick” power supply units are able to supply. Daisy chaining is simple too, with the BOSS PCS-20A Parallel DC Cord. It’s cheap, effective and can power up to 8 pedals from a single BOSS pedal, like the BOSS TU-3 Chromatic Tuner. It’s essentially a combination of mixer, splitter box and circuit router. It has 3 inputs and 3 outputs, and these can be set in various combinations. Here are a few features that make the LS-2 an indispensable tool for the modern guitarist: The 2 Level control knobs can help create a new mix of sounds, or even work as a clean boost. Maybe you would like to tweak a specific frequency, or even control feedback. If that is the case, you’re in need of a BOSS GE-7 Graphic Equalizer. The GE-7 has its roots right back to the earliest BOSS pedals, specifically the GE-10 from 1976. The sliders represent a different frequency that you can boost or cut, for sculpting a specific tone (more bass, less mid, extra high, etc.). If you place it before your preamp, you can alter distortion characteristics, such as making a British amp sound more American. Placing it in the effects loop gives you an incredibly powerful shaping tool, where you can dramatically change your tone in increments. No wonder it has found its way onto the pedalboards of players like David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Slash (Guns n’ Roses), The Edge (U2) and George Lynch (Dokken). Like distortion, for example. You find your sweet spot and off you go. Easy. Modulation and time-based effects are what we’re talking about here. Sure, you can set and forget them too, but if you have an Expression Pedal, like the BOSS EV-30, the qualities that make these effects so good now make them even better. Any parameter on any effect within the effects unit is assignable to the EV-30, along with any external pedals too.

Save space on your board while expanding your expressive control. With the minimum level and polarity reverse switches, you can conjure some pretty wild sounds as well, like filter sweeping your flanger while increasing your reverb levels. Need to switch amp channels without reaching over and pressing a button, mid-set. You do?! Then it’s a footswitch that you’ll be needing, like something from the BOSS FS series. Crucial changes. It’s the difference between a screaming, distorted lead sound and a quiet, clean strum. So it’s important to choose your footswitch wisely! Its unique layout makes it perfect for sitting snugly on your pedalboard. In case you’re unfamiliar with these terms: Its stereo input allows for single stereo cable connection and can control a wide range of instruments, amps and electronic devices. Depending on your needs, and if you need latching or non-latching, these single operation switches have you covered. We should know, we’ve been creating them for over 40 years. The appeal of a good, quality stompbox is that it does one thing and it does it well. But this in itself can be a slight limitation. If you require a palette of sounds or want to bring your favourite stompboxes into use with other effects, chances are you’ve considered a multi-effects unit. Although, these are typically designed to be self-contained. As such, there’s not always a place for you to bring in an extra stompbox, especially your favourite overdrive or distortion. Wouldn’t it be great to combine both worlds. Like how the BOSS MS-3 Multi Effects Switcher allows you to do? The MS-3 is the best of both worlds. It’s a flagship BOSS multi-effects engine with the ability to include 3 external pedals. Want your classic BOSS OD-1 to push you amp? You got it. Want to bring in some reverb, delay and phaser as well, but put them in the loop? Easy. This unit truly does bridge gaps and gives you incredibly powerful switching options.

For more control, you can use it for amp switching, with MIDI devices and use expression pedals with it. No wonder it’s an essential tool for the modern guitarist! Using those pedals to create unique sounds is another one. But recalling the sounds you want from your favourite pedals instantly isn’t always the easiest job. You have cables to reorder, boxes to reset and if you’re adding MIDI to the equation, patches and channels to set. This sounds like a job for a pedal switcher. And, an intuitive one at that. Look no further than BOSS ES series for that job. Essentially acting as the brain of your entire rig, the ES series of switchers have the ability to arrange your effects in any order you like and save them in multiple configurations. It’s like your own custom multi-effect unit with the pedals you know and love. Massive assignability and control are only the start though. The intuitive software editor lets you do all the necessary setting up via a laptop or computer. Then, simply store, recall, import and export your programs into the ES. All you need to do is plug in and play! Boss LS-2 solves this problem because it has a volume knob where you can fine-tune the volume level of the loop. The volume of both loops separately, to be exact, although I don't use it that way. So, to put it shortly, all my pedals are in a single loop of LS-2, which means I can turn multiple pedals with a single press on LS-2. Bypass buffer is standard for Boss - there is a minor high frequency loss, but that is nothing compared to sound loss that happens when you connect 10 pedals in series. I love it and it is a permanent addition to my pedalboard. Put us to the test! One stomp is all it takes to instantly switch between two guitars or effects setups, change amplifiers or switch between an amp and tuner. Rock-solid BOSS construction ensures the AB-2 will stand the test of time. One stomp is all it takes to instantly switch between two guitars or effects setups, change amplifiers or switch between an amp and tuner. Rock-solid BOSS construction ensures the AB-2 will stand the test of time. It is one of the hidden treasures among stomp box effects. You might need one, even if you still don’t know what it does. But with the multiple switching and signal routing options, you can accomplish just about any two- or three-to-one, one-to-two or -three routing scheme, meaning that for example you can use the pedal for feeding up to three instruments into an amp, or create a stereo setup playing your guitar into two amps, etc. Just looking at the sample settings (included in the box) can make your head hurt. There aren’t a lot of things you can’t do with this simple looking white pedal if you think creatively and understand the basic construction of it, in which the pedal’s block diagram (see the manual) comes handy. First of all there are six jacks on the LS-2, named RETURN A, RETURN B, INPUT, SEND A, SEND B, OUTPUT. There are three knobs on the pedal, two of them are the level controls for the two (pre-amp) channels, from zero volume up to 20dB; in the non-notched middle position they have unity gain, so the input and the output levels are the same. The third knob is a rotary switch, you can select the six different modes with it. These modes are the following: This way you’re not forced to use compressors with built-in blend function anymore (for example the Barber Tone Press ), because you can achieve that with the compressor of your choice and the LS-2. It works with regular center negative 9V DC adapters, or you can also use a 9V battery.

An additional feature is that you can power other effect pedals with the LS-2 by connecting a DC cord to the AC Adaptor Out jack. No more switching in the effects and getting drowned out by guitarists. I have even gone so far as to put an octave pedal in my second (clean) loop, so I can do bass solos which have distortion on the high notes I'm playing, and the clean sub-octave makes it sound like there's another bassist backing me up. It's useful for lots more situations than this, but to be honest, this is the only reason I bought it - and it's worth it!Sorry, we failed to record your vote. This pedal has an input and output, and also has two effects loops (send and return), which are marked A and B. It can run on a 9V battery and also has the option of using a power supply. It is not rackable and cannot be edited with a computer. This is a really easy pedal to use if you know exactly what you're doing. You would run your guitar straight into the input, and then from the output to the amp. You then have the option of using two different effects loops, marked A and B. You can have one chain in A and the other in B. The knobs on the left are to adjust the input gain from each loop; that way if one of your loops is really loud and the other is really soft you can adjust them to make them appropriately level with your dry signal. There's also a switch that determines what signal flow to use and how the switch will work. You have the option of switching between A, B, and Bypass, and the knob selects different combinations of each depending on how you use it. I think that this is a great pedal. It doesn't color the sound at all. In fact, I like the fact that it will completely bypass a signal if you want it to and can help you match a signal level after the chain. This is a great way to smooth out lots of effects so that they are a good fit dynamically. That way you aren't making your soundman's life a living hell. There is literally no tonal change with this pedal so I'd say that overall it's a great sounding pedal in that respect. It's only going to sound as good as your guitar and the other pedals in the chain. I like the price and the usefulness of this pedal the best. It's basically a great way to reduce the amount of time stomping on pedals and get an immediate response, as well as fix problems that come in with pedals robbing you of volume. I've played a few of these but I like this one a whole lot more than some of the others I tried. Boss made a pretty solid pedal here and I recommend you check it out.

View price information Did you find this review helpful? yes no. This clears up your signal a great deal and the pedal is great for general cleaning up of your chain. This is not a rackable unit as it is a stomp box. The configuration of the pedal is pretty straightforward and is easy to use. Once you learn how to use this to its full potential, its extremely helpful to clean up your sound and to loop your effects. I don't have a manual for this, so I don't know how complete it is. Being that this isn't really an effect pedal, I can't speak about the sound quality of it per say, but I can say that with this pedal your tone will be cleaner if you loop your effects pedals through it because it will eliminate noise that comes from your pedals when you are not using them. I have only used this with guitar, but will work fine with anything that you want to look effects with. The pedal won't color your sound and will help to make your clean tones shine for what they are without the noise that comes with using a few different effects pedals at once. I've been using the Boss LS-2 Line Selector pedal for about two years and have found it to be really helpful when playing live to clean up your sound. The pedal is easy to use and has a variety of different effective uses. It has the Boss seal so you know you're getting a high quality made product, even though the price tag is cheap. The LS-2 is definitely worth a look for those guitar players who like to use a bunch of different effect pedals at once. An input, output, 2 loops (meaning A and B, return A and B) 6 modes of operation (white button) 2 volume knob (A and B) Everything is well explained in the user manual.I think everyone should find his account. About me, I do not use at home, alone or with friends, to compare the gear without unplugging everything every time! -Many guitars on the same amp. -Many with the same guitar amp -Many of the same preamp PowerAmp -And even mix the two preamp.

But it can also be used to have different effects loop LS2 in an amp FX Loop, or front, depending on the effects. Seems it is not True Bypass. She can breathe a little on some devices (therefore not all!) I've had two years and it makes me service for my small game characters. I got to Cygnus for little more than half its original price so it's a good shot! 7 of 9 people found this review helpful View price information Did you find this review helpful? yes no.
