While the most difficult aspects of metal detecting have been automated, it is a sophisticated electronic device which requires an understanding of some basic features and metal detecting concepts. If you do not have prior experience with a metal detector, we strongly recommend that you: 1) Adjust the Sensitivity to a low setting in the event of false signals. Always begin use at a reduced sensitivity level; increase to full sensitivity after you have become familiar with the detector. 2) Do not use indoors. This detector is for outdoor use only. Many household appliances emit electromagnetic energy, which can interfere with the detector. If conducting an indoor demonstration, turn the sensitivity down and keep the search coil away from appliances such as computers, televisions and microwave ovens. If your detector beeps erratically, turn off appliances and lights, especially those with dimmer switches. Also keep the search coil away from objects containing metal, such as floors and walls. 3) Read this manual. Most importantly, review the Quick-Start Demo (p.7-8) and Basic Operation (p. 9-11). 4) Use 9-volt ALKALINE batteries only. Do not use Heavy Duty Batteries. Next The. Wave all objects over the Search Coil The Nail and Pull-Tab will not be detected. At this setting, the detector will detect a coin-sized object, such as a quarter, buried approximately seven inches deep. In this mode, all types of metals will be detected. An object’s probable identification is indicated by the arrows at the top of the display. In addition, the probable depth of coin-sized objects is indicated by the large numeric indicator in the center of the display. To decrease the level of discrimination, press the DISCRIMINATION touch pad. To demonstrate the ZAP control: 1) Set the detector in All-Metal Mode Note: ZAP functions in all modes, but is best demonstrated first from the All-Metal Mode. Therefore, we have incorporated an audio feedback mechanism to alert the user to the nature of buried objects. This audio feedback system first alerts the user to the presence and classification of objects, whose nature and location can be confirmed using the LCD display. Some non-U.S. coins of recent targeted metal, as well as the PROBABLE depth of the target, in inches. A hobby metal detector is an extremely sensitive device; the search coil creates its own magnetic field and acts like an antenna. If your detector beeps erratically when the search coil is motionless, the unit is probably detecting another electromagnetic field. Never swing the coil like a pendulum. It is important after sweeping the coil directly to sweep the coil at a consistent over the suspected target a few speed over the ground as you times, it is more than likely. Richard 5.0 out of 5 stars I read the manual from the manufacture website so I was ready to go straight out of the box. I tested the detector out in my front yard and pulled out a 1989 quarter within moments of installing the batteries. This machine is great. We hit a local park just after a fair and grabbed some coins in the grass then went to an old baseball field and found an old brass water spigot. There is another park in town that is smaller and found some shredded soda cans from a lawn mower. I gave up on a couple holes because I couldn't really pinpoint the exact location. I think it was because there were too many shredded soda cans in the area. This thing works. I can't wait to go out to the swim beaches and playgrounds.

There are several noted Civil War battle sites in Oklahoma so maybe a musket ball or infantry button or belt buckle will turn up. I would recommend this detector to anybody starting out. Until then I plan on many family adventures with this fine tool right here.Easy instructions. Started fing coins at my local park right away.I couldn't ask for more. Okay, I can; I can ask that I make a fortune, too, finding trinkets and baubles;-). Seriously, although I haven't tried it out yet, I couldn't be happier (so far) with my metal detector and plan to try it out at my first opportunity!I have found enough coins, jewelry, and other interesting things to more than pay for it in monetary value not to mention the enjoyment and excitement I get when the tones go off. Its like the bobber moving while fishing on a lazy day. Nothing gets your blood pumping like what monster could be on the end of the line or, in this example, treasure in the hole. But however i must admit my very first bad experience was when the first batteries needed changed. The rear plastic tabs will either break or they catch the edge of the outer battery case and destroy the battery coming out. A small narrow screw driver and pressure forward on the battery while prying up will sacrifice the battery rather than break the units tab. My fix was purchasing four rechargable nimh 9volt batteries from Radio Shack. Two for the unit and two spares. They have a smooth edge and come out without catching the plastic tabs on the unit. They slide right out with no effort and two batteries will power my unit for nearly 20 hours with headphones that i also purchased at radio shack that both have separate volume controls solving the problem of not having a volume control on the unit. It may not be a minelab excalibur. But i also don't do the hobby for a living. I initially purchased it to find my lost wedding ring in the yard.

I paid a guy 20 dollars who spent 20 minutes trying to set his high end detector and another half hour scouring for it with no luck. All he found were nails, staples and pop tabs. I knew the ring was there somewhere. So I bought this unit, read the instruction to shut of the iron detection, and found my ring in about fifteen minutes. Paying for itself right out of the box. Since then everything has been nothing but pure enjoyment. My grandfather detected and so did my father. At the time (60's and 70's they had top line units but you needed a degree in soil science, seismology, metallurgy and a degree in electronics to operate them. I just notch out the iron if im jewelry hunting on the beach and dig more than the kids building sand castles. Which is funny to me because when my 2200 goes off there is always something there even down to 9 inches. I'm not saying i may not be passing over things that other high end units may detect but hey. The way i look at it if I don't know its there im not really missing it. Maybe someday when the kids are grown, my bills are all paid and retirement affords me more time to dedicate my efforts, then maybe I'll part with the big bucks for the highpower higher tech units. Until then all i can do is compare it to fishing once again. I caught more fish as a kid with my trusty zebco 202 and 33 than I ever did with my expensive bait casters and as i recall i had much more fun. That's what its all about. In summary the discovery 2200 works exactly as it says it does. Mine has been working fine at the beach for four years and my experience with it puts it far above just an ordinary entry level machine. My sons Discovery junior is quite capable as an entry level machine and performs as well or better than the high end models of my grandfather and fathers day. They say you get what you pay for but not always. Sometimes you get more than what you pay for and it doesn't have to weight 20 lbs now a days to be quality.

I love the detector itself but have always disliked the battery holder inside. Mine has finally broken. One of the tabs that hold one of the (2) two 9 volt batteries in-place, has broken. Know I am in the dilemma on wether to send it in, wait and at their mercy, pay the price or toss it. At the price, it is barely worth the hassle. So I will probably toss it and not go for a Bounty Hunter next time. If they think that the customer is not worth the bother to design a descent battery holder then I am not a dummy! They made it horribly hard to replace the 9-volt batteries in it. You have to force and shove the batteries in and hope you put it in right. I attempted to fix it with a rubber band, newspaper, and superglue. I'm no MacGyver, but I got it to work for another month using that. The depth detector part is very inaccurate as well, off by up to 3-4 inches at times. It often misread the targets as well. It does have good depth though, can go down about 9-10 inches. I'd go with another metal detector or brand if you aren't in the mode to force batteries in the holder for 45 minutes and get screwed by it snapping off.In order to navigate out of this carousel please use your heading shortcut key to navigate to the next or previous heading.
